Who Invented the Drum?

Unlike other musical instruments that were developed by one or more inventors, the drum has been around since prehistoric times. The most ancient peoples, many of which disappeared from the face of the earth a long time ago, used a variety of drums all over the world. Apparently, for the first time, the drum began to be used in order to gather people of a tribe together. It was something like a military signal.

After some time, the drum became an integral part of the music that primitive people used in the fight against "evil spirits". For these people, the sound of the drum had religious significance. And since many rituals were accompanied by dances, the drum provided an excellent accompaniment.

Primitive people used drums made of different materials. Some of these tools were hollow tree trunks with animal skin stretched over them. Bamboo drums were made from long pieces of hollow bamboo stems that were cut open and struck with sticks. Some people struck their own bodies while lying on the ground to make drum-like sounds! The ancient Egyptians made extensive use of drums.

The typical Egyptian drum was small and carried in the hand. The ancient Jews also had drums, which were a kind of tambourine, which was struck with a hand or a stick. The Chinese and Japanese have also used drums since time immemorial. American Indians used drums not only to give signals or musical accompaniment to dances, but even to predict the weather! When rainy weather approached, the skin that covered the drum would stretch.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Ice as fuel for satellites 26.03.2015

Scientists from the Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) have developed a fuel system for small artificial satellites CubeSat, thanks to which the devices will be able to move in space due to the molecules of evaporating ice.

Lightweight and low-cost CubeSats are extremely small spacecraft. A typical cubic module with a face length of only 10 centimeters weighs about a kilogram, while the range of tasks performed by CubeSat is quite wide, from monitoring the atmosphere to searching for exoplanets. Such satellites are usually launched with the help of "passing" carrier rockets or from the board of manned and automatic cargo spacecraft and orbital stations. The only drawback of CubeSat is the lack of its own engine, which significantly limits their capabilities.

To solve this problem, Dutch engineers designed an ice-powered engine: 100 grams of ice is loaded into the CubeSat, which begins to evaporate in space and release steam molecules. The use of a heating element speeds up the steam release process and thus gives the satellite a driving force. On such an "ice" engine CubeSat, according to calculations, will be able to fly for several years.

A prototype satellite is under development, but for now, scientists have to figure out how to get ice into orbit so that it stays ice. There is also an option to freeze water directly in orbit, but this will significantly complicate and make the design heavier. However, other groups of scientists are working on engines for the CubeSat in parallel, and it is not known which system will be the winner.
