Lake reed, Schoenoplectus lacustris var. Scirpus lacustris L. Description, habitats, nutritional value, culinary use

Bulrush

Lake reed is a perennial herbaceous plant from the sedge family.

Reeds are easy to distinguish from reeds and cattails. If the cattail has long leaves and dark brown cobs on the tops, consisting of pressed fluffs, and the reed has narrower and longer leaves, as well as a panicle of flowers at the end of a long stem, then the reed stands in the water, in the form of a tall (up to 1-2 m) a round twig without panicles and cobs.

Only at the end of July, a small tassel of prickly brown spikelets appears at the top of the smooth stem. Reeds are used as fuel, for livestock feed, for the manufacture of roofs, mats, carpets, paper, for the production of alcohol, tannins, lactic acid and glycerin.

The chemical composition of reeds is not well understood.

Bulrush

The rhizome of the reed is considered edible. In spring and autumn, it contains a lot of starch and sugars. If the rhizome is ground in a meat grinder and boiled for 40-50 minutes, you will get a sweet decoction. Boiling the broth over low heat, you can get a thick and even sweeter syrup.

The basal part of young plants is used for dressing potato, cereal and meat soups.

From the dried rhizome, you can get flour and bake bread.

Even in camping conditions, you can cook a delicious dinner by the fire if you bake the rhizome on coals or in ashes. In the spring, the basal part of the stem is also white. It is juicy and sweet in taste.

Many hunters, fishermen and tourists are well aware of the nutritional value of reeds and use it for food.

If we talk about people who find themselves in extreme conditions, then they are not in danger of starvation when there is reed nearby.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

USB 3.2 standard 27.02.2019

Representatives of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced the future of the USB standard. It was decided to stop at the USB 3.2 standard and make it the main and only one for the next few years.

This important decision on the popular standard was made because there are several versions of the third generation of USB in the world: 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 - the last one was approved in 2017. All of them have different specifications, differing from each other in data transfer speed: first, speeds of 5 Gb / s were reached, then up to 10 Gb / s and up to 20 Gb / s in the case of USB 3.2.

However, due to confusion in specifications and an attempt to make backwards compatible connectors, there was a complete mess. Data transfer rates of 5 Gbps were mandated by the USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 specifications. 10 Gbps could be achieved with the USB 3.1 Gen 2 specifications. USB 3.2 specifications, by using two data lanes in a certified cable instead of one, they allowed both exchange at the level of 10 Gb / s and 20 Gb / s. In the case of only one line, depending on the version of the host controller, USB 3.2 can also work at 5 Gb / s.

As a result, the USB-IF organization was fed up with the confusion over the specifications of the third generation USB interface, and they decided to make USB 3.2 the main standard for this connector for the coming years. Thus, from the middle of 2019, all manufacturers will start releasing their devices with a USB 3.2 port, and there is no talk of USB 4.0 yet.

USB 3.2 will have three speed options: SuperSpeed USB, SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps, and SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps. For ordinary people, this is understandable and clearly speaks of the capabilities of USB ports.
