Origin: Eurasia

Area: Ziziphora thyme grows mainly in Central Asia and the Caucasus, as well as in Europe and North America.

Chemical composition: The leaves of the plant contain many essential oils, including thymol, carvacrol, linalool and pinene.

Economic value: Ziziphora thyme is used as a spice, flavoring and medicinal plant. In folk medicine, it is used as an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent, as well as a carminative and antispasmodic agent for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. In the food industry, it is used to flavor various products.

Legends, myths, symbolism: In some cultures, Ziziphora thyme is used as a symbol of life and strength, as it survives in hot climates and dry soil. Ziziphora thyme

Lamiaceae family - Lamiaceae.

Strongly fragrant subshrub, 5-30 cm tall, branching at the base, with simple or mostly branched stems, woody at the base, densely covered with small, recurved hairs.

The leaves are oval, slightly leathery, hairy below, entire. Petioles densely and very finely pubescent, bracts similar to stem leaves, but smaller, lateral branches erect-protruding, curved or somewhat wavy.

Inflorescences located at the tops of stems and branches, loosely capitate, hemispherical or obversely conical, often with splayed flowers. Calyx relatively short, mostly green or lilac in places, completely covered with very small and dense hairs, its teeth obtuse, corolla small, medium-sized or sometimes large, with a slightly protruding tube, linearly and punctately spotted in the fauces, stamens more or less long.

The fruit is a dark gray nutlet up to 1,75 mm long.

It grows on open hills, dry rocky slopes, limestones, rocky places along river banks.

It is found in Dagestan and Eastern Transcaucasia.

The aerial part of the plant contains an essential oil, the main component of which is pulegone, in addition, it contains pinene, limonene and dipentene.

Leaves and tops of stems can serve as a spice.

Ethnoscience:

  • To treat a cold: infuse 1 tablespoon of dried thyme ziziphora leaves in a glass of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Then add honey and drink the resulting infusion 2-3 times a day to improve immunity and reduce cold symptoms.
  • For the treatment of stomach disorders: infuse 1 tablespoon of dried thyme ziziphora leaves in a glass of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Then drink the resulting infusion before meals to improve the functioning of the stomach and reduce the symptoms of the disorder.
  • For the treatment of kidney disease: infuse 1 tablespoon of dried thyme ziziphora leaves in a glass of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Then drink the resulting infusion 2-3 times a day to improve kidney function and reduce symptoms of the disease.
  • For the treatment of sore throats: infuse 1 tablespoon of dried thyme ziziphora leaves in a glass of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Then use this gargle several times a day to relieve pain and improve healing.
  • For the treatment of respiratory diseases: infuse 1 tablespoon of dried thyme ziziphora leaves in a glass of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Then use this infusion for steam inhalation to improve breathing and reduce the symptoms of respiratory diseases.

Cosmetology:

  • For skin cleansing: infuse 1 tablespoon of dried thyme ziziphora leaves in a glass of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Then use this infusion to cleanse the skin to remove excess oil and impurities.
  • To reduce skin inflammation: grind a few leaves of ziziphora thyme and mix them with honey. Apply the resulting mixture to the skin to reduce inflammation and irritation.
  • To reduce acne: infuse 1 tablespoon of dried thyme ziziphora leaves in a glass of boiling water for 10-15 minutes. Then use this infusion to wipe problem areas of the skin to reduce acne and improve skin condition.
  • To reduce dark circles under the eyes: crush a few leaves of jujube thyme and mix them with coconut oil. Apply the resultant mixture around the eye area to reduce dark circles and improve complexion.
