Who Invented the Spotting Scope?

In 1608, one of the students of Hans Lippershey, a Dutch spectacle maker, having fun in his spare time, began to examine objects through two lenses located one after the other. He was very surprised to find that objects at some distance looked like they were in his palm. The student told the owner about this, and Lippershey made the first spotting scope, placing two lenses in the tube at the appropriate distance from each other.

Prince Mauricius of Nassau, who commanded the Dutch armed forces, realized that this tool could be used for military purposes and ordered it to be kept secret. However, rumors about the invention of a device that allows a good view of distant objects nevertheless spread.

Among those who heard these rumors was the great physicist, mechanic and astronomer Galileo Galilei. Knowing only that lenses are used in the mysterious device, Galileo managed to independently understand the principle of its operation. In 1609, he personally assembled his spotting scope, much more advanced than Lippershey's.

Having carried out many observations of terrestrial objects with the help of a spotting scope in a wide variety of conditions and being convinced of the reliability of the information obtained with its help, Galileo turned it to the sky and thereby turned the spotting scope into a telescope - the most important tool of modern science.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
