Which galaxy is closest to us?

The nebula in the constellation Andromeda is another galaxy next to ours. Like our Galaxy, it consists of billions of stars, star clusters, clouds of gas and dust, extinct stars, planets. The light from our "galactic neighbor" has been rushing towards us for two million three hundred thousand years. That's the distance between galaxies! Light travels 150 million kilometers from the Earth to the Sun in just 8 minutes.

Our Galaxy, the Andromeda Nebula, and other galaxies form the Local Group (or system) of galaxies. As many cities make up a country, so clusters and superclusters of galaxies make up our Universe.

Scientists have found that the Universe has a so-called cellular structure: in its structure it resembles a honeycomb, or a sponge, or soap suds, where giant cells are formed by clusters of galaxies.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why is the value of money determined by gold?

Metal coins or painted pieces of paper, which we think of as money, are in fact only symbols. But they are also real. The money is backed by a stock of precious metal held by the state that issues the money. The standard for measuring the value of money common in the civilized world is gold and silver. They are quite rare and retain their value, but their stocks are sufficient to meet the needs of the market.

In other words, paper money and coins issued by the government as money were accepted as having value because they were backed by the amount of gold and silver held in the treasury. In 1821, Britain introduced monometallism (that is, the use of one metal) as the basis of its monetary system. Gold was accepted as the official currency. By 1914, gold had become the unit of measure for almost all currencies in the world.

With a standard measure of value, countries could easily trade with each other. United States dollars, francs from France, German marks had a fixed value in gold. By 1933, most countries were off the gold standard. But many currencies, including the US dollar and the euro, are still determined by the set price of gold.

Gold is very important in international trade. The government buys and sells gold bars. Part of the gold is used to pay international debts, the other part is kept. The stored gold is called the gold reserve.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Cell phone dangerous for pedestrians 15.01.2008

After observing 127 pedestrians who were crossing the street, talking on a mobile phone, scientists from Ohio University (USA) noticed that 48% of them behaved too carelessly at the crossing - they crossed the road right in front of the cars.

At the same time, only 16% of those who listened to music from a portable player on the move noted such risky behavior. Apparently, the fact is that passive listening to music does not distract the pedestrian's attention as much as active participation in the dialogue.

Perhaps, the researchers say, it is worth banning the use of a mobile phone not only when driving, but also when crossing the street.
