The hottest place

The highest average annual temperature for the 6-year period of measurements from 1960 to 1966 was observed in Dallon, Ethiopia and amounted to +34,4°C.

In Death Valley, California, USA, for 43 consecutive days from July 6 to August 17, 1917, temperatures over +48,9 ° C were noted.

In Marble Bar, Western Australia, the average temperature exceeded +32,2°C for 162 days from October 30, 1923 to April 8, 1924, and the maximum temperature reached +48,9°C.

The highest temperature in the shade (+58°C) was recorded in El Alisia, Libya (altitude 111 m above sea level), on September 13, 1922. On the same day, a temperature of +58,4°C was recorded in Saudi Arabia Given the small difference in readings, comparable to the error of changes, these two places are considered the hottest on Earth.

The sunniest place

In Yuma, Arizona, USA, 90% of the days of the year (over 4000 hours) are sunny, and St. Petersburg, Florida, USA, since February 9, 1967. to March 17, 1969 there were 768 consecutive sunny days.

In the territory of the CIS, this was not observed. But still, in Kerki, Chardzhou region, Turkmenistan, a record was registered - 159 clear days a year.

darkest place

At the south pole the sun is absent for 182 days, at the north pole the polar night lasts 176 days, I don’t know what caused such an injustice. But on the other hand, there are one and a half times more stars in the sky of the northern hemisphere than in our antipodes, therefore our nights are much brighter. All this together certainly led to the invention of computers in Europe, not Patagonia.

The driest place

The average annual rainfall in the Calama area, located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, is zero.

The longest drought

For 400 years until 1971, not a single rain fell in the Atacama Desert, Chile. Despite this, this desert is by no means devoid of life, and therefore a person can survive there.

The largest number of deaths due to drought

As a result of the drought in Northern China in 1876-79. from 8 to 13 million people died, which is comparable to the results of collectivization in the 30s in Ukraine.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Anti-mosquito composition for clothing 30.12.2001

President of the Australian company Healthguard Corporation K. Harvey has developed an anti-mosquito composition for impregnating clothes that is safe for health, but reliably protects against mosquitoes.

Anti-mosquito impregnation can withstand fifty washings and at the same time retains all its qualities. When testing this product, it turned out that the midge dies even when approaching a person, without even touching his clothes.
