Plextor M7e SSD

13.01.2015

At the Consumer Electronics Show 2015, Plextor showcased the all-new M7e SSD, which uses the M.2 form factor and PCI Express 2.0 x4 interface, delivering a major performance improvement over the current generation M6e SSD.

While Plextor SSDs are renowned for their reliability and high read/write speeds even after extended use, last year's Plextor M6e is by no means a performance champion. The reason for this was the use of the PCI Express 2.0 x2 interface, which has a maximum bandwidth of about 1 GB / s. However, its successor, the Plextor M7e, will use a PCIe 2.0 x4 interface with up to 2 GB/s bandwidth, which means it will raise the bar.

The Plextor M7e SSD is based on the Marvell 88SS9293 controller and Toshiba's 19nm Multi-Level (MLC) NAND flash memory. In addition, the Plextor M7e will be equipped with power failure protection technology, further enhancing the manufacturer's already legendary SSD reliability.

While Plextor is still working on firmware for the M7e, the latest SSD is already showing significantly better performance than its predecessor. According to CrystalMark, the sequential read speed of the novelty is 1.4 GB / s, and the write speed is about 1 GB / s. Thus, the new Plextor M7e outperforms the Samsung XP941, which is used by many expensive laptops, such as the Apple MacBook Pro.

Plextor plans to release the M7e drive in M.2 form factor with PCIe 2.0 x4 interface. To ensure compatibility with current platforms, Plextor will ship with the new SSD and a special adapter, a small HHHL size card that plugs into a PCI Express 2.0 x4 (x8, x16, etc.) slot. Plextor did the same with the M6e, which can be used in both an M.2 slot and a PCI Express slot.

Plextor is expected to release the M7e SSDs in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities in the second quarter of 2015. Considering the high read and write speeds, as well as a range of Plextor's proprietary technologies, M7e devices could become quite popular SSDs this year. The cost of new products is unknown, but taking into account the simplicity of the design of these drives, I would like to believe that their prices will not be excessively high.

The appearance on the market of the very similar Kingston HyperX Predator PCIe and Plextor M7e will inevitably intensify competition among PCI Express 2.0 x4 SSDs, as well as high-performance drives in the M.2 form factor. As a result, the availability of new SSDs may become higher.

While SSDs based on the Marvell 88SS9293 controller, which supports four PCIe 2.0 lanes, introduced at the beginning of the year, seriously raise the performance bar for mainstream SSDs, such devices may not stay on their pedestal for long.

Given the fact that back in August last year, Marvell introduced the 88SS1093 controller, which supports four PCI Express 3.0 lanes (maximum bandwidth of about 4 GB / s) and can provide even higher write and read speeds, by the middle of the year it is logical to expect more faster M.2 SSDs with PCIe 3.0 x4 interface.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Hyperloop overclocked to 1019 km / h 06.11.2020

The fourth industrial revolution will require not only the robotization of production, but also new types of public transport for a "hyper-connected" society. Such transport should combine low costs, low emissions and be very fast. As a working option, transportation of people in "hypertubes" with pumped-out Hyperloop air is considered, the speed of movement in which will exceed 1000 km / h. The Koreans proved that all this is possible, however, only on the layout.

The Korea Railway Research Institute successfully passed the 1019 km/h speed mark on the Hypertube mock-up. It is claimed to be a world record in the study of a promising form of public transport. The 1:17 scale model of the "hypertube" recreates the accelerating unit, the vacuum tube for movement, the transport capsule and the braking system. Each part of the layout provides an opportunity to test methods, technologies and design elements before building a full-scale solution.

A speed of 1019 km / h was achieved at a pressure in the pipe of 0,001 of atmospheric pressure. The layout allows you to set an arbitrary pressure in the pipe, which makes it possible to conduct experiments in order to find the most cost-effective solution. In parallel, the institute is working on the creation of superconducting magnets, which should become an element of the system for moving transport capsules.

The researchers hope that over time, the hyperpipe-based transport system will become commonplace for the country and will contribute to the development of its economy.
