Did you know?

What color was Robin Hood's tights?

Red.

The earliest stories about Robin Rude date back to the XNUMXth century.

In the longest and most important of them, "A Gest of Robyn Hode", Robin and his "merry gang" are dressed in "scarlet robes" of striped fabric.

In other ballads, Robin appears alternately in red and scarlet, while his fellows are invariably dressed in green. Thus, Robin's status as a commander is emphasized: in medieval England, "scarlet" cloth was considered the most expensive, since kermes, obtained from dried female kermes worms (Kermes ilicis), was used to dye it.

This also explains the origin of Robin's name - an association with a robin bird (robin redbreast) - and one of his closest associates, Will Scarlet (Scarlet (English) - scarlet, bright red.).

Only in later versions does the color of the Sherwood legend's outfits become bright green - although, if you think about it carefully, "Lincoln Green" may not be so green at all.

In medieval England, Lincoln was the capital of the dye industry. The color "Lincoln Green" was indeed bright green (blue paint made from mignonette was dyed yellow), but "Lincoln Grain" was just the same scarlet - the paint was prepared from kermes, at that time known by the word "graine".

The early Robin Hood ballads are simply obsessed with clothing. In addition to the fact that the "noble robber" himself is nicknamed in honor of his headdress (The word hood is translated from English as "hood".), in the "Small Song" almost every stanza mentions robes, dresses, capes, trousers, shirts and fabrics in six different colors, and in one of the songs, Robin even pretends to be a manufactory merchant and sells 123 feet of green cloth to the king.

At least one historian puts forward the following version: the true essence of the stories about Robin Hood is not at all in the traditional struggle "forest against city" or "poor against rich." In his opinion, the main thing in these ballads is the victory of the merchant-adventurer over the decaying, corrupt nobility.

Like, Robin Rude, dressed in expensive red cloth, actually defended not the poor, but only the emerging middle class.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why do people with dark skin color have light palms and feet?

The main factor that determines the color of human skin is the concentration of melanin pigment, which is fixed at the genetic level. Regardless of the basic color of the body, the skin on the palms and feet of all people is light, as it does not contain melanin.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food.
