Focus Description:

It is not known when the first special device of a mathematical nature intended for the demonstration of a trick appeared, or what it was, but it seems certain that one of the oldest tricks in which it could be required was the trick of finding out the age of a person or a number intended by him using a series cards with numbers.

The simplest version of this trick is performed using a series of cards (usually there are six or more), each of which has a series of numbers on it. The spectator looks through all the cards and gives the magician those that have the number he has in mind. By looking at the cards handed to him, the magician can immediately name this number. To do this, he only needs to add up the smallest (“key”) numbers corresponding to each card. Since the numbers on the cards are usually arranged in ascending order (this makes it easier for the viewer to find the number he has in mind, if it is on a given card), the key numbers will be immediately visible.

The first key number is usually 1, and the rest are obtained by doubling the previous number. So, with six cards, these will be the numbers 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32. With their help, by combining cards in different ways, you can get amounts from 1 to 63.

Sometimes the cards are painted in different colors. This allows the person showing (who must remember the key number corresponding to each color) to step aside while the spectator is sorting the cards and call out the intended number without looking at the front of the cards.

Extraction of useful resources on the moon 08.04.2020

The United States is preparing to develop the resources of the Moon and a number of other space objects. Yesterday, April 7, the official website of the US Presidential Administration published a decree signed by Donald Trump to support the commercial development of space resources.

The introductory part of the document refers to the Space Policy Directive of December 11, 2017. In particular, it is indicated that the United States and its partners intend to deploy bases on the Moon, and later on other space objects, for long-term stay of people. This may require the use of resources, including water and some minerals.

"However, uncertainty regarding the right to extract and use space resources, including the expansion of the right to commercial mining and the use of lunar resources, does not allow some commercial organizations to participate in this enterprise," the text of the decree says.

The White House proposes to ignore the resolution of the UN General Assembly in 1979. In particular, the "Agreement on the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies" states that the exploration and use of the Earth's satellite is carried out in the interests of all countries of the world. The United States did not sign this agreement. The remaining paragraphs of the decree offer the government to encourage the extraction and development of space resources by commercial companies under the control of the United States or in international partnerships.

However, the UN resolution allows non-military space exploration. In particular, Article 3 of the "Agreement on the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies" states: "It is prohibited to establish military bases, structures and fortifications on the Moon, test any types of weapons and conduct military maneuvers. The use of military personnel for scientific research or any or for other peaceful purposes is not prohibited. Nor is the use of any equipment or means necessary for the peaceful exploration and use of the Moon."
