Insidious Albion

Augustin Marie Ximin

Phraseologism: Insidious Albion.

Meaning: About the foreign policy of England, steadily pursuing only its own national goals, for the sake of which it can go to the rejection of previously reached agreements, allied treaties, etc. (iron.).

Origin: Albion is the ancient name of England, known since ancient times. For the first time in literature, the phrase appeared, apparently, in a poem written by the French Marquis de Ximen (Augustin Marie Ximen) (1726-1817) about the introduction of a new republican calendar in France on October 5, 1793. In this work, the poet calls to attack the "treacherous Albion" at sea. Expressions close in meaning are "English treachery", "treacherous Englishman", "treacherous island", etc. - were very popular in France during the Great French Revolution and subsequent years of Napoleonic rule, since Great Britain consistently fought the revolutionary French Republic - refused to recognize the new state, after the execution of King Louis XVI organized an anti-French coalition of powers, etc. France after London violated on May 12, 1803, the Peace of Amiens concluded (March 25, 1802) with Napoleon, who otherwise threatened Great Britain with the use of armed force. Throughout the reign of Napoleon, the expression "perfidious Albion" is constantly present in the French press and in political rhetoric. Later, this image gains pan-European popularity. In 1840, a war began between Egypt and Turkey, in which France supported Egypt, and Great Britain joined the coalition of countries (Russia, Austria and Prussia) that supported Turkey. The expression again gained wide circulation: Heinrich Heine wrote on July 27, 1840 (Lutetia, July 14-27, 1840) that "perfidious Albion" was the slogan of all the French, except for the Legitimists who expected support from abroad. In Russia, this expression gained particular popularity during the Crimean War (1853-1856), when recent opponents - Great Britain and France - united in the war against Russia on the side of Turkey. Complaining about "English cunning" has a long history. For the first time this idea is found in the historical chronicle of 1209-1210, owned by the writer Otto St. Blazensky, who speaks in it of "perfidious England" (Anglia perfida). The reason for these words was the behavior of King Richard the Lionheart during the third crusade.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The construction of the main stage of the super-heavy rocket Space Launch System is completed 08.01.2020

NASA and Boeing have completed work on the main part of the new Space Launch System (SLS) super-heavy rocket, which is designed to deliver people and cargo into deep space. The base unit, manufactured at NASA's Michoud plant in New Orleans, is currently on its way to Mississippi, where it will undergo key testing.

SLS is an important part of the Artemis program, NASA's initiative to return humans to the moon by 2024. When construction is fully completed, the Space Launch System will be the most powerful rocket in the world. The stage was loaded onto a barge and sent to the NASA space center in Mississippi. There she will pass all the main stages of Green Run testing before the first launch of the mission. The test includes refueling and full load of the four main engines, as during the actual launch. The rocket will not be installed on the launch pad, but on a test stand.

This testing is expected to take place this summer, after which the rocket can go to the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral (tentatively between July and October 2020). But until then, there is still a lot of work to be done, in particular, to install the top of the rocket and attach the Orion capsule to it. The first flight of the SLS with the ship will be without a crew, NASA will test the effectiveness of the capsule in space.

The US space agency has not yet set an exact launch date for the mission, dubbed Artemis 1. A year after the test flight, NASA plans to launch another rocket, but with a crew on board. According to Boeing SLS Vice President and Project Manager John Shannon, the construction of the second rocket is 40% faster. The most difficult tasks were the welding process and the creation of the part of the stage where the engines are installed.

In the meantime, NASA still needs to think through many other things. These are space suits and lunar modules. This year will be a landmark year for the agency, as it will show if NASA can prepare all of this to get astronauts safely to the lunar surface.
