Winged words

Homer
Homer

Phraseologism: Winged words.

Meaning: Widely known words and set expressions, the literary or historical source of which can be established: aphorisms, quotations, apt expressions that have become proverbs.

Origin: The primary source is the poems "Iliad" and "Odyssey" by the legendary poet of Ancient Greece Homer (IX century BC), where such an expression occurs repeatedly: "He uttered a winged word", "They exchanged winged words among themselves quietly", etc. e. He called all words winged because from the mouth of the speaker they seem to fly to the ear of the listener. But Homer had this expression only in a poetic way. The modern meaning was given to it by the German scientist Georg Buchmann (1822-1884), the author of the famous collection (1864) Winged Words. In this collection, he placed literary quotations, words, sayings of historical figures, aphorisms, names of literary and mythological characters that have become common nouns, figurative and brief characteristics of historical characters - "father of history" (about Herodotus), "king-sun" (about Louis XIV), etc. This collection still serves as the main source of information on "winged words", since Buchmann provided them with his detailed comments regarding their origin and use. Buchmann's understanding of winged words has also been established, when those expressions are considered as such, the authorship, literary or concrete historical source of which can be established. So, in the 13th edition (1882) of his book, Buchmann stated that the expression "winged words" in his interpretation had already become a recognized linguistic term in other languages. It also exists in the Russian language, although sometimes it is understood too broadly, including anonymous sayings, folk catchphrases, proverbs and idioms of folklore origin in the circle of winged words proper.

Random phraseology:

Oh, dear, dust and fog.

Meaning:

About the hardships of travel, nomadic lifestyle.

Origin:

From the song "Roads", written by the composer Anatoly Novikov to the verses of the poet Lev Ivanovich Oshanin (1912-1996): "Oh, roads, // Dust and fog, // Cold, anxiety // Yes, steppe weeds."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Each 3D printer is unique in its own way. 24.10.2018

As the experiments of researchers from the University of Buffalo have shown, the same objects made on different 3D printers can be quite distinguished from each other.

The authors of the work proceeded from the fact that each 3D printer, like the same typewriter, reproduces some of its characteristic prints over and over again. Therefore, you just need to understand what kind of prints they are, and learn how to "read" them. A series of identical objects were printed on different printers (14 in total), after which detailed images of each of them were obtained using a scanner. Upon closer examination, it turned out that each printed object had characteristic geometric parameters and texture features. By translating the obtained data into a numerical form, it was possible to calculate the degree of difference between one object and another.

It turned out that the mechanical features that affect the movement of the nozzle, the flow of material, etc. are all rather unique parameters for a particular 3D printer. Based on the totality of such characteristics, it is possible to compare the printed object with a specific apparatus with high accuracy. The researchers also tried to test what is called the strength of their method by testing ways in which you can erase individual fingerprints or try to pass off one device for another. It turned out that whether it is a change in the workplace and printing parameters, or a six-month break in the operation of the printer, or physical damage to printed objects - all this has little effect on the accuracy of identification.

3D printing, like many other things, can be used not only for good, but also for harm. Someone prints weapons, someone forges various parts or makes other bad things. Naturally, forensic scientists would like to have some methods to distinguish one printer from another by their products.

Of course, it is too early to say that all 3D printers sold will be listed in special file cabinets, as is done, for example, with rifled weapons. However, those who attempt to use 3D printing for criminal purposes should be aware that the results of their actions will not remain anonymous.
