What is the largest herbivore that has ever existed?

Until recently, the largest herbivore that ever existed on our planet (and animals in general) was considered diplodocus, a giant fossil pangolin, the remains of which were found in the United States in the sediments of the Jurassic period. The length of this dinosaur was about 25 meters, the weight of the largest specimen found reached 20 tons.

In 1993, a scientific description of the giant Argentinosaurus appeared for the first time, the length of which from head to tail was 40 meters. While it is considered the largest animal in the history of the Earth. According to experts, the Argentinosaurus could weigh up to 100 tons, however, some scientists give more modest figures - 50 tons. But it's still a record in the world of dinosaurs

How did Daedalus and his son Icarus escape from Crete?

When the Cretan king Minos learned about the complicity of the famous master Daedalus in the unnatural passion of Queen Pasiphae for the white bull and the escape of Theseus and his companions, he ordered Daedalus and his son Icarus to be imprisoned in the Labyrinth, from where they were soon released by Pasiphae. After that, Daedalus and Icarus flew away from the island on wings skillfully made by Daedalus from feathers glued with wax.

Before the start of the flight, Daedalus warned his son not to soar too high, for the sun could melt the wax, and not to fall too low, so that the feathers would not get wet in the sea. Icarus disobeyed his father and began to rise higher and higher towards the sun, rejoicing in the power that directed him upward. When Daedalus once again looked over his shoulder, Icarus was no longer visible - only the waves below shook the scattered feathers. The wax could not stand the heat of the sun and melted, Icarus fell into the sea and drowned.

After mourning his son, Daedalus reached the Sicilian city of Kamik to King Kokal, who cordially provided shelter to the famous master.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Shatter-resistant glass based on mollusk shells 02.10.2021

Scientists from McGill University (Canada) have developed a stronger and more rigid glass, taking the inner layer of mollusk shells as a model. The new material has the elasticity of plastic. In the future, it can be used to make screens for smartphones that will not break on impact.

Inspired by nature, scientists have created a new composite material made of glass and acrylic, imitating the mother-of-pearl shell of molluscs. Mother-of-pearl, the authors explain, has the properties of a hard material and the strength of a soft material. It is made from tough pieces of chalky material coated with layers of soft proteins that are highly elastic. This structure provides exceptional strength, making it 3000 times more rigid than the materials it is made from.

The researchers took the "architecture" of mother-of-pearl and replicated it with layers of glass flakes and acrylic, resulting in an exceptionally strong yet opaque material that can be produced easily and inexpensively. They then went even further to make the composite optically transparent. By adjusting the refractive index of the acrylic, they made it blend seamlessly with the glass to create a truly transparent composite. Going forward, the developers plan to improve the material by incorporating intelligent technology that allows the glass to change its properties, such as color, mechanics, and conductivity.
