How did navigators find water in the Galapagos Islands?

The Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean were discovered by the Spaniards over 300 years ago. Sailors were struck by the abundance of giant tortoises, thousands and hundreds of thousands grazing along the shores and on the slopes of the mountains. They were the only large herbivores on the islands, and despite their very high numbers, they somehow managed not to deplete pastures and trample them. This turtle is called elephant or Galapagos.

Most of the Galapagos Islands do not have fresh water sources, and turtles feed on succulent cacti there. But where there are springs, they gladly eat leaves from the lower branches of trees, eat lichens, grass, fruits of trees and shrubs. They also go to water every day.

Since there are few sources, turtles from all over the island go to the spring, sometimes for several kilometers, trampling wide paths that run to it from all sides. It was on them that the first sailors found fresh water.

Why does scarlet fever happen?

Scarlet fever is a disease that affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat and is usually accompanied by a skin rash. This infectious disease is caused by a bacterium that belongs to the group of streptococci. Although the disease itself is no longer considered serious, other, more serious diseases can follow scarlet fever. The two most serious of these are rheumatic attacks and nephritis (kidney disease).

Scarlet fever most often occurs in winter. Half of the cases of scarlet fever occur in children between the ages of three and eight, and 90 percent in children under the age of fifteen. It is necessary for a person to get sick with scarlet fever once, and he develops immunity.

Many are carriers of the bacteria of this disease, located in the nose and throat, without getting sick. They spread the bacteria to other people through coughing or sneezing. After a person becomes infected with scarlet fever, two to five days pass, then the disease manifests itself with high fever, chills and vomiting. At the same time, the throat hurts a lot. It turns red, swollen and covered with white spots. The tongue also turns red and small swellings appear on it.

On the second day, small bright red spots begin to spread all over the body, arms and thighs. This rash appears due to poisonous secretions from bacteria. This toxic substance attacks the small blood vessels in the skin and enlarges them.

After seven to eight days, the rash fades, the temperature drops, and the throat clears. Scales appear on the skin of the soles and palms, which exfoliate. During the second week of the disease, a significant part of the skin on the face and body is exfoliated.
