stone heart

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Stone heart.

Meaning: A cruel, devoid of compassion man.

Origin: From the Bible. In the Old Testament, in the Book of the prophet Ezekiel (11:19), it is said: "I will put a new spirit in them, and I will take away the stony heart out of their flesh, and I will give a heart of flesh."

Random phraseology:

Mighty bunch.

Meaning:

A creative community of cultural, art or scientific figures, as well as an association of people passionate about a common idea, solving a certain problem (jokingly).

Origin:

From the review of the Russian art critic and scientist Vladimir Vasilyevich Stasov (1824-1906) of a concert arranged in honor of the arrival of the Slavic delegation in St. Petersburg ("St. Petersburg Vedomosti" dated May 13, 1867). "Mighty handful" he called the prevailing in the 60s of the XIX century. a group of Russian composers of the "new Russian musical school" headed by M. A. Balakirev - M. P. Mussorgsky, A. P. Borodin, N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, Ts. A. Cui. V. V. Stasov concluded his review with the words: "Let's end our notes with a wish: God grant that our Slavic guests never forget today's concert, God grant that they forever keep the memory of how much poetry, feelings, talent and skill a small, but already powerful handful of Russian musicians" (V. Stasov, Sobr. soch., Vol. III, St. Petersburg, 1894). But, if Stasov himself spoke of the mighty handful almost enthusiastically, then many of his contemporaries at first used this expression only in an ironic sense. The beginning of this was laid by the composer A. N. Serov, who, from an adherent of the Balakirev circle, became his harsh critic ("Notes against notes", "Music and Theater", 1867, No. 6). And such a playfully ironic attitude towards this association persisted for quite a long time. Thus, the music critic "Rostislav" (pseudonym of F. M. Tolstoy) wrote in his reviews published under the title "Petersburg Letters" (the newspaper "Moskovskie Vedomosti" dated January 21, 1875): "Yesterday the opera was performed for the first time" Demon" by A. G. Rubinshtein... Judging by some hissing... we should expect an attack from the so-called (jokingly) mighty bunch." But, despite the fact that Stasov's expression was ridiculed by many at its appearance, later it firmly entered the Russian language as a definition of an outstanding phenomenon of Russian musical culture. (And the members of this association were even called "Kuchkists", like members of any other creative associations).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

A new type of manifestation of magnetic monopoles has been discovered 20.12.2017

Since the 19th century, scientists have begun to notice the striking similarity between the laws of physics that describe electrical phenomena and the laws that describe magnetic phenomena. However, there is one single thing, the absence of which prevents the laws from being completely symmetrical - magnetic monopoles.

These magnetic monopoles in the form of elementary particles continue to be elusive for scientists today, but scientists have already created a number of artificial objects that demonstrate some of the properties of magnetic monopoles.

A team of researchers from the Austrian Institute of Science and Technology has succeeded in demonstrating that droplets of a superfluid liquid, liquid helium, act as magnetic monopoles with respect to molecules immersed in them. Drops of superfluid liquid have been studied by scientists for a very long time, but until recently no one has been able to notice their "magnetic feature".

Working with electric charges, it is quite easy to separate their positive and negative poles. A negatively charged electron is just the negative pole, and a positively charged proton is the positive one. Each of these poles is a separate physical particle that can be separated from each other. With magnets, everything looks much more complicated, if you take one magnet and divide it into two parts, then we get two magnets with two poles. In other words, it is fundamentally impossible to physically divide a magnet into two, in which only one of the poles is present.

Puzzled by the mystery of the properties of magnets, scientists have created artificial systems and ordered crystalline structures that act like magnetic monopoles. At one time, a group of theoretical physicists and mathematicians showed that the same phenomenon can occur in molecular systems, including systems of natural origin.

Such systems include drops of superfluid liquid, the dimensions of which are calculated in nanometers. To describe the unusual properties of such systems, the concept of a quasiparticle, called angulon, was even introduced, the existence of which makes it possible to explain some of the experimental data collected by scientists over the past 20 years.
