Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What is the difference between fruits and vegetables?

The word "fruit" usually refers to the fleshy part of a plant that develops from a flower and has seeds. Vegetables are herbaceous plants. A herbaceous plant is one that has a soft stem and little or non-woody tissue.

Botanists believe that the part of the plant that contains the seeds is the fruit. They divide fruits into three main classes: fleshy fruits with seeds, such as oranges, melons, berries, and apples; stone fruits, such as cherries, plums, peaches, and dry fruits, such as nuts, cereals, beans, and peas.

If it surprises you that botanists consider beans and peas to be fruits (because they contain seeds), then you will be even more surprised to learn that cucumbers and squash are also called fruits. It depends on how seriously we want to take this field of knowledge. In addition, in different parts of the world there are different traditions: the same edible part of the plant is considered a fruit in a water place and a vegetable in another. Just like in animals, there are families in the plant world.

Did you know that cabbages, turnips, radishes, asparagus, and cauliflower, for example, all belong to the same family of vegetables?

Lettuce, chicory, and artichoke belong to a different family of vegetables. The gourd family includes cucumbers, melons, and pumpkins. The legume family includes peas, all types of beans, peanuts and soybeans. Asparagus is related to the common onion, leek, garlic, and chives. And here is an interesting family of nightshade. It includes potatoes, eggplants, peppers and tobacco. Fruits and vegetables are similar in that they provide us with vitamins and minerals that keep us healthy.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

The oldest black hole in the universe has been found 10.12.2017

American astronomers from the Carnegie Institution announced the discovery of a new galaxy, in the center of which is a supermassive black hole. Scientists suggest that the galaxy formed 690 million years after the Big Bang.

The galaxy and black hole formed during the era of reionization - it is believed that at this time the universe was covered with clouds of neutral hydrogen, which blocked most of the starlight. Over time, quasars, considered one of the strongest sources of energy in space, ionized the hydrogen, causing the universe to become "brighter".

The new galaxy was named J1342 + 0928. During its study, it turned out that the galaxy is especially rich in metals. Astronomers have noted that this is typical of the very first stars, which consisted almost entirely of hydrogen and helium.

Also, in the accumulation of interstellar dust, astronomers found a large amount of carbon, and in the very center of the galaxy, where the black hole is located, nitrogen, magnesium and even silicon.

Such observations can say one thing: this is a new, previously unknown type of star formation, shared Eduarda Bansados, lead author of the study.

Scientists speculate that the early universe contributed to the formation of massive, unstable stars that exploded after a few million years, producing metals faster than the universe in its current state. New stars were already formed from the "remains" of the former ones, thereby accumulating heavy elements in themselves, the authors of the study concluded.
