Created the first synthetic retina

Oxford University researchers have developed the first soft synthetic retina to help the blind. The technology could revolutionize the production of bionic implants and develop new treatments for degenerative eye diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, which leads to total blindness.

The retina is the inner shell of the eye, which contains protein cells - they convert light into electrical signals that pass through the nervous system. This causes a "response" in the brain, ultimately forming a complete image.

The scientists used a two-layer material consisting of a hydrogel and biological cells of membrane proteins that mimic the functions of the retina. Cells act like pixels in a camera, detecting and responding to light to create a grayscale image.

“Synthetic material can generate electrical signals that stimulate neurons in the inner part of the eye, just like the retina. The human eye is incredibly sensitive, so foreign bodies, such as metal implants, can cause inflammation. And the biological material is soft, it is based on hydrogel and more friendly "to the natural environment of the eye," experts say.
