Kolyuria gravilate

Perennial herbaceous plant up to 30 cm high. Rhizome woody, creeping. The stem is upright. The leaves are elongated, pubescent. The flowers are small, solitary, bright yellow. The fruit is a dark brown achene. Blooms in May.

Homeland kolyuriya - Central Asia. Under natural conditions, kolyuria grows on rocky slopes in the foothills of Altai, in Western and Eastern Siberia, and Eastern Kazakhstan. In mid-latitudes, you can also grow kolyuria in your backyard.

The plant is light-loving and winter-hardy, grows well on almost all soils, but prefers light, moist soils. Propagated by seeds, seedlings or division of the bush. Sowing is carried out in the spring in deeply plowed soil. A week after the emergence of seedlings or planting seedlings, the soil is loosened to a depth of 6-8 cm; plots sown with seeds are thinned out, leaving a distance of 20-30 cm between plants. Further care consists of systematic weeding and loosening, watering (if necessary). The rhizomes are dug up in the third year in the fall, separated from the aerial part and washed thoroughly, then dried in the shade, in a well-ventilated place. Store in packaged form.

The aromatic and taste qualities of the rhizomes of the coluriae are due to the presence of an essential oil in them, consisting mainly of eugenol. In addition, they contain vitamin C and tannins. Eugenol, used in dentistry as an anesthetic and antiseptic, is obtained from the essential oil of columea.

Lovers of this spice use colouria roots instead of tea. Kolyuria improves the taste of marinades, fish dishes, lamb, game, etc. It is used as a spice in the canning industry instead of cloves. Colouria is also used to flavor tobacco.

Perennial plant 10-35 cm high.

Rhizome creeping, branched, woody, with long, thin roots, basal leaves oblong-ovate, short-petiolate. Stems ascending, lignified at base, stem leaves alternate, sessile, underdeveloped.

Flowers solitary or in 2-4-flowered inflorescence; hypanthium campanulate, with ten prominent veins, dressed in yellowish-green hairs; corolla bright yellow, petals 5-7, rounded, short-marigolded; stamens are numerous. The fruit is an oblong-ovoid achene covered with vitreous papillae.

Blooms in May.

It grows in mountain and alpine steppes, on steppe, often stony or rocky slopes (usually along river valleys).

It is found in Western and Eastern Siberia - in Altai and in the Sayans.

Kolyuria gravilate

The roots after pre-fermentation contain 0,8-1,5% essential oil, which is a dark brown liquid, consisting almost entirely of eugenol (93-98%). Vanillin is extracted from eugenol. Dried roots are sometimes referred to as "clove root".

The essential oil is used in the alcoholic beverage, canning, food concentrate, confectionery, chemical, pharmaceutical and perfume industries, for flavoring tobacco.

Dried roots and rhizome with the smell of eugenol can be used for flavoring in cooking and confectionery, in canning and other industries.

In crushed form, they are sometimes put into the dough like cinnamon, used to make tea.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Solar panels working at night 19.04.2022

Scientists at Stanford University have developed solar panels that can generate electricity at night when the sun has already set. To do this, they assembled a structure from conventional solar panels and a thermoelectric generator.

Given that any matter with a temperature above absolute zero radiates heat into the atmosphere, the proposed design allows it to be captured - from the solar panels themselves.

By "capturing" the temperature difference between the ambient air and the panels, the thermoelectric generator receives the necessary electricity.

Stanford University engineers managed to collect up to 50 milliwatts per square meter of solar panels placed on the roof of the university buildings.

Experts believe that they will be able to double the figure with a theoretical limit of 1-2 watts per square meter. This is not much, but for some tasks it is more than enough.
