Astilba. Legends, myths, history

Astilbe of David (Chinese astilbe)

There is no Greek legend about the beautiful astilbe simply because she comes from East Asia and North America. But there is such a bike here.

A long time ago, somewhere on the very edge of the earth, there lived a young man whose name was Push-Pak. His family made a living by harvesting medicinal herbs. Once Push-Pak decided to go in search of new "deposits". But before he left, he went to his fiancee Yu-Li to say goodbye. The girl saw off Push-Pack with sadness, and in parting gave her lover a bag of seeds and ordered them to be scattered wherever his foot would step.

Push-Pak walked through the forests and fields. Found what I was looking for. And then he decided to return to his homeland. But by that time he had gone so far from home that he simply could not find his way back. He sat down on the ground and wept, and looking up he saw a flower with a white blossoming panicle. One, then the second, followed by the third ... It turned out that astilbe grew from the seeds that his beloved gave him, thereby paving the way for the young man to go home.

Astilbe of David (Chinese astilbe)

For the first time, astilba was heard in Europe thanks to the Scottish naturalist Lord Hamilton, who visited China in 1825 in search of new plant varieties. Then she was appreciated by the French botanist Emile Lemoine, the son of the famous breeder Victor Lemoine. Then the German scientist Georg Arends devoted his whole life to astilbe breeding, and we are grateful to him for the huge variety of varieties of this beautiful plant.

However, after the death of Arends in the middle of the 20th century, astilba was actually deleted from the list of popular garden flowers. And only now, after almost a hundred years in the history of selection, astilbe is experiencing its second birth.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Drones will automatically fly to the scene of the firefight 21.12.2021

Engineers from an Israeli company have presented a system of drones that automatically respond to shots. They help the police assess the situation on the spot.

Israel has introduced a system that combines autonomous drones with technology for determining the location of shots. ShotSpotter will be used in over 120 cities in the US, South Africa and the Caribbean. She uses a network of microphones in the area to detect "loud, impulsive sounds".

When such a sound is detected, its geographic origin can be determined by analyzing the millisecond difference in time during which it was recorded by different microphones - the closer the microphone was to the weapon, the earlier it recorded the sound of the shot. In doing so, a combination of AI software and live personnel is used to determine whether a sound is indeed a gunshot.

In the current version of the system, devices are immediately sent to the scene of a shootout, and a police squad is sent there.

Israeli drone manufacturer Airobotics has added its drones to the system. In the new version of the system, the police will still arrive at the scene, but the nearest drone specific to this system will be sent. The device will be in the air for several seconds, immediately heading towards the source of the shots. By analyzing the video from the on-board camera, the police will be able to better understand the situation.

Each drone will be based on an indoor docking station where its batteries will be charged when not in flight. The robotic arm will remove the battery and replace it with a fully charged one so the drone is ready to fly at a moment's notice. This service is planned to be used in urban areas throughout Israel.
