Sort by: Claviceps

Family: clavicipitaceae

Area: Ergot grows in many regions of the world, especially in temperate zones on various plants, but most often on cereals such as rye, barley, oats.

Chemical composition: The plant contains alkaloids such as ergotamine, ergocristine, etc.

Economic value: Ergot is used in medicine for the treatment of migraine and other diseases, as well as in the manufacture of a number of medicines.

Legends, myths, symbolism: In Native American culture, ergot was used for ritual purposes to achieve a state of trance and connection with the spirit world.

Ergot, Claviceps purpurea, Tulasne. Botanical description, habitat and habitats, chemical composition, use in medicine and industry

Sporynya

Various life cycle stages of Claviceps purpurea

A fungus that parasitizes cereals belongs to the class of marsupial fungi of the ergot family (Clavicipitaceae).

In medicine, a fungus that parasitizes rye is used.

Horns (sclerotia of the fungus) are oblong, somewhat curved, 1-3 cm long, 3-5 mm wide, trihedral, black-violet.

Chemical composition. Ergot contains numerous alkaloids related to indole derivatives. Left-handed, as a rule, highly active, right-handed low-active. An integral part of all left-handed alkaloids is lysergic acid.

Ergot horns contain various alkaloids ergotamine, ergotamine, ergosine; ergosynine, ergocristine, ergocriptinine, ergocornine, ergometrine (ergobasine), and ergometrine (ergobasinine). An integral part of the left-handed ergoalkaloids is lysergic acid. The alkaloids of the clavinet group peninclavin and costaclavin have been isolated from ergot horns. Ergot horns also contain ergosterol - 0,1%, which, when irradiated, turns into vitamin D2, amines tyramine, histamine, agmatine; alkylamines trimethylamine, methylamine, hexylamine, etc.; amino acids asparagine, valine, alanine, leucine, phenylalanine, etc.; nitrogen-containing compounds acetylcholine, choline, betaine, ergothioneine, uracil. Secalonic and chrysergonic acids were isolated from the colored substances.

Application in medicine. Ergot preparations are mainly used in obstetric and gynecological practice for uterine bleeding in the postpartum and post-abortion period, with hypotension and subinvolution of the uterus, with menorrhagia and metrorrhagia, polyps, endometritis, etc. The hemostatic effect is mainly associated with compression of the vessels by the contracted muscles of the uterus.

Contraindications to the use of ergot preparations are pregnancy and childbirth due to the risk of miscarriage or due to the possibility of fetal asphyxia due to tonic contraction of the uterus.

Ergot is not used immediately after childbirth, as tonic contractions of the muscles of the uterus prevent the separation and exit of the placenta.

Ethnoscience:

  • Migraine treatment: 1 teaspoon of ergot seeds pour 1 cup boiling water, leave for 10-15 minutes, strain and drink. This infusion can help relieve headaches.
  • Treatment for insomnia: Bring 1 cup of water to a boil, then add 1 teaspoon of ergot and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Strain and drink before bed.
  • Treatment of heart disease: Bring 1 cup of water to a boil, then add 1 teaspoon of ergot and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink 2-3 times a day.

Cosmetology:

Ergot contains strong toxins and is not used in cosmetology.

Attention! Before use, consult with a specialist!

Ergot, Claviceps. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Ergot is a parasitic fungus that develops on various plants. Because of this, there is no need to grow ergot intentionally. However, if you want to obtain ergot for medicinal or other uses, you will need to collect it from already infected plants.

Plant selection:

  • Ergot can infect various types of plants, such as rye, wheat, barley and others. Therefore, you should look for plants that already have ergot disease.

Collection and preparation:

  • Ergot is collected during grain ripening, when it stands out most on the surface of plants. Harvested mushrooms should be dried and stored in a dry place in closed containers.

Storage:

  • Store ergot in a dry, cool and dark place. Refrigeration can also extend its shelf life. Please note that ergot should not be accessible to children or animals as it can be poisonous.

Plant care:

  • Since ergot is a parasitic fungus, there is no need to care for the plant.

It is important to remember that ergot can be poisonous, so a qualified professional should be consulted before using it for any purpose.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
