Which traditional view of ancient Greek statues is wrong?

For a long time it was believed that ancient Greek white marble sculptures were originally colorless. However, recent studies by scientists have confirmed the hypothesis that the statues were painted in a wide range of colors, which eventually disappeared under prolonged exposure to light and air.

Which country has 13000 islands?

Indonesia occupies most of the Malay Archipelago, one of the largest in the world. Its islands are scattered on both sides of the equator between two oceans - Indian in the west and south and Pacific in the east. Indonesia is sometimes referred to as the "land of a thousand islands", although there are actually 13 of them.

The western islands - Sumatra and Kalimantan - were once part of the mainland (Eurasia), the shallow South China and Java Seas are land areas covered with water. East of Indonesia, the islands of New Guinea and Tanimbar, - the former part of Australia, flooded by the waters of the Arafura Sea.

In Indonesia, there is no change of seasons. Only the direction of the winds changes. From December to February, moist northeasterly winds blow from the Pacific Ocean, and in March they are replaced by dry southeasterly winds. In addition to seasonal winds, breezes constantly blow from the sea to land. In the Strait of Malacca sometimes there are strong winds, like typhoons. They are called "Sumatra".
The nature of Indonesia is unusually diverse and generous. The islands are always warm and humid, so the tropical forests, which cover half of the country's territory, are unusually dense and lush. Trees grow in several tiers. Down below them is twilight and silence. There is almost no grass. There are many parasitic plants that live by feeding on the juices of host plants.

Only at first glance it seems that there is no one in the rainforest, except for butterflies, birds and monkeys, from time to time emitting piercing cries. In fact, there are a lot of different animals here. In Indonesia, in Sumatra and Kalimantan, there is a great ape orangutan (in Indonesian - "forest man"). Crocodiles live in all reservoirs of Indonesia. Many different lizards, including huge ones.

There are a lot of fish in the seas.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Pen writing with LEDs 15.08.2023

A team of engineers from Washington University in St. Louis has unveiled an innovative concept that allows flexible LED structures to be applied using a conventional ink pen or inkjet printer.

This is achieved thanks to new inks designed specifically for this purpose. These inks contain advanced polymers, metal nanowires and perovskites, crystalline materials capable of emitting a wide range of colors. The principle is simple: an ink pen is filled with these special substances, and with their help you can "draw" flexible light-emitting diodes (LED) or photodetectors on various surfaces.

The application of this technology makes it possible to create a variety of functional devices, including biomedical sensors and disposable electronics, by simply drawing ink lines layer by layer. The main advantage lies in the versatility of the ink, allowing you to work on a variety of substrates, including even balloons. This innovation overcomes the traditional limitations in LED manufacturing that require specialized facilities and equipment.

"Our ink is specifically designed for use in conventional pens, making this method affordable and easy. We aimed for the elasticity of each layer of the device so that it can bend, stretch and even curl without losing functionality," emphasizes Junyi Zhao, one of the authors of this innovation.

This discovery opens up new horizons for the flexible LEDs and functional devices of the future, and demonstrates the potential for practical applications in next-generation wearable devices.
