What rule, derived by Leonardo, obeys the trunk and branches of trees?

Leonardo da Vinci derived the rule that the square of the diameter of a tree trunk is equal to the sum of the squares of the diameters of the branches, taken at a common fixed height. Later studies confirmed it with only one difference - the degree in the formula is not necessarily equal to 2, but lies in the range from 1,8 to 2,3. Traditionally it was believed that this pattern is due to the fact that a tree with such a structure has an optimal mechanism for supplying branches with nutrients. However, in 2010, the American physicist Christoph Elloy found a simpler mechanical explanation for the phenomenon: if we consider a tree as a fractal, then Leonardo's law minimizes the likelihood of breaking branches under the influence of wind.

Who is the main character of Pushkin's Tale of the Priest in the church-censored version?

Pushkin's "The Tale of the Priest and his Worker Balda" was not published during the poet's lifetime, and even after his death it was published for a long time in the editorial office of Zhukovsky, who replaced the priest with the merchant Kuzma Ostolop. Without these changes, the fairy tale had no chance at all of being passed by church censors. The author's text became known to the general public in the 20th century, but the version about the merchant has not been forgotten. In 2011, the rector from Armavir, with the approval of the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church, released it in a small edition for distribution in Sunday schools and church shops.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

E-cigarettes increase the risk of stroke 13.11.2021

American cardiologists have found that vapers suffer from a stroke about 15% more often than other people of similar age who smoke regular cigarettes.

"The liquid for vaping contains not only nicotine, but also other substances that negatively affect the functioning of blood vessels. Because of them, brain vessels can be damaged: blood clots may occur in them more often, which increases the risk of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke," commented Karen Fury, professor at Brown University (USA) and one of the authors of the study.

Recent studies show that tobacco use is more dangerous than vaping, but the latter also threatens the human body. In particular, in a pair of electronic cigarettes, scientists have found toxins, carcinogens and other substances that not only increase the likelihood of lung cancer, but also make the walls of arteries and veins more fragile.

In a new study, physicians led by Urvish Patel from the Mount Sinai Hospital School of Medicine (USA) found another negative effect associated with the use of electronic cigarettes. Scientists analyzed surveys conducted by the US social and medical services in 2015-2018 among 266 thousand Americans, some of whom had recently experienced a stroke. This information became useful for researchers due to the fact that respondents indicated which cigarettes they use - regular or electronic.
