Is the equator the hottest place on earth?

When we talk about different places on earth, whether they are "hot" or "cold", we are talking about climate. In general, the climate is determined by the amount of heat from the sun. It is the heat of the sun that warms the earth, the oceans and the atmosphere. It also draws moisture into the atmosphere and thus causes rain. Solar heat causes differences in atmospheric pressure, which creates winds, and solar heat and winds cause ocean currents.

Therefore, when discussing the climate in a certain place, it is important to keep in mind the effect of solar heat on this area. Due to the fact that the surface of the Earth is round, the largest solar thermal effect is observed at the equator, the smallest - at the poles.

At the equator, the sun's rays hit the earth vertically. Above and below the equator, the rays fall on the earth at an angle, obliquely. This means that these areas above and below the equator, or temperate zones, receive less sunlight than the equatorial zone, or tropical zone. Regions farthest from the equator receive the least amount of heat. When the rays hit the Earth at an angle, they pass through a thicker layer of the atmosphere, and some of the heat is absorbed by the air - this is another reason why other areas receive less heat. All these reasons make the equator the hottest region on Earth.

True, here we are talking about what is called a "solar climate", that is, a climate that depends only on the heat of the sun. However, there are many other factors that determine the so-called "physical climate" - the climate that is actually found on Earth.

The most important of these factors are water, land and altitude. The waters of the oceans and ocean currents, the existence of large expanses of land, the height of the terrain above sea level - all this together creates different climates, regardless of location on Earth. Therefore, at certain times in some place far from the equator, it can be hotter than at the equator itself, although the equatorial region is the hottest on Earth.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Flash drive 16 GB 13.03.2006

At CeBIT 2006, the Korean company Iocell introduced a 16 GB USB flash drive. To date, this is the most capacious flash drive available on the market.

So far, not much is known about the new device: only that it will be connected to a computer via USB 2.0, which provides good data transfer speed, and that additional drivers are not required for the USB drive to work.
