When was the first sound recording made?

The first sound recording was made by Thomas Edison in 1877. His first sound recording machine had a cylinder that turned with a knob. It also had a horn and a blunt needle. From the narrow end, the horn was closed with a flexible membrane. Sounds entering from the wide side of the horn caused vibrations of this membrane, to which the needle was attached. The needle moved up and down under the influence of sounds.

The cylinder was covered with a layer of tin foil. The needle was pressed into this foil, and the horn, along with the needle, slowly moved along the cylinder as the handle was turned. Thus, by going around the cylinder many times, the needle squeezed out a track on the foil. When someone spoke or sang into the horn, the needle moved up and down. Descending, the needle made deeper grooves in the foil, and rising, smaller ones. The change in the depth of the grooves was a reflection of the sound waves produced during speech or singing.

This is how the sound was recorded. To reproduce the recording, the horn with the needle was moved back to the beginning of the groove. When the needle moved along the groove, it caused the thin membrane to vibrate in the same sequence as when writing. This caused the air in the horn to vibrate, which was the cause of the sound, reminiscent of the one that sounded during the recording!

How much carbon dioxide is on the planet?

It is 0,038% in the atmosphere, and every year it becomes more and more. If the content of CO2 exceeds 0,042%, catastrophic consequences - melting glaciers, acidification of the oceans - will become irreversible. To prevent this from happening, by 2050, humanity must reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by 48%. To do this, by 2030 it is necessary to invest 12 billion euros in technologies to reduce such emissions.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food.
