Kanavalia xiphoid

Synonym: Dolichos gladiatus Jacq.

Annual, climbing, tall plant. The stem and leaves are bare, but there are also slightly pubescent; flowers on long peduncles, in racemose inflorescences of 10-40 flowers; corolla white, pink or purple.

The flowers themselves are large, with a pleasant aroma; the flag at the top is deeply notched; beans are large (up to 20-28 cm long), wide (3,6-7,7 cm), linear, xiphoid, with hard woody walls, flat or swollen, straw-yellow, with a short straight or curved beak, containing 8 -16 seeds each.

Seeds are oblong, elliptical, 22-38 mm long and 11-28 mm wide, white, cream, purple, gray or blackish-gray, with a scar 15-20 mm long.

Distributed in the gardens of tropical and subtropical countries (India, Indochina, Japan, China and the southeastern United States). Unripe beans and seeds (mature and unripe) are eaten. Cultivated like curly beans.

Kanavalia xiphoid

In the Antilles, another type of canavalia is cultivated and used - Canavalia ensiformis D. C, called Haricot-Sable there. The beans of this plant reach 30 cm in length and 3 cm in width.

Grains of 8-12 in a bean, white or pink color. Seeds of the species C. obtusifolia, close to those described, contain toxic substances, so it is dangerous to eat them.
