What does a cell do?

A cell is the building material that makes up any living being. All living things are made up of one or more cells. The simplest plants and animals consist of one cell. In more complex animal and plant organisms, cells work together. They are organized into groups, each of which performs its work in a plant or in an animal organism.

A tissue is a group of cells of a certain type that perform a specific job. For example, there is bone tissue, muscle tissue, skin tissue. When tissues come together to perform a specific task, that group of tissues is called an organ. An example of this is the human hand, which consists of bone, muscle, nervous and other tissues. There are five most important cell types in the human body.

Epithelial cells make up the skin, glands, and the lining of blood vessels. Three types of muscles are made up of muscle cells. Blood cells can be found in the blood and lymph. Connective tissue cells make up the framework of the body. The circulatory system in higher lifeforms carries nutrients and oxygen to all cells, and removes waste products such as carbon dioxide.

Individual cells slowly combine nutrients with oxygen, thus producing the heat and energy needed to keep the body alive and working. It is thanks to this energy that muscles can contract, nerves can transmit signals, and the brain can think.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Where and when were critics impressed by the avant-garde paintings that the chimpanzee painted?

In Swedish Gothenburg in 1964, four paintings by the avant-garde artist Pierre Brasso were exhibited at an art exhibition. They delighted critics, but then it turned out that their author is Peter the chimpanzee from the zoo, who was trained to work with a brush and paints. The predominant color in Peter's works was blue, as he liked the smell of cobalt blue. One critic, even after the exposure, said that these paintings were the best in the exhibition.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The robot performed before the British House of Lords 11.10.2022

In its first address to the UK House of Lords, the realistically human-looking robot said artificial intelligence could be "both a threat and an opportunity" for artists. The Ai-Da robot got its name from mathematician Ada Lovelace. Back in the 19th century, the scientist made a description of an early version of the analytical engine (prototype of a computer) and compiled the world's first program for this machine.

Ai-Da took part in a meeting of the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee as part of a study on the future of the art, design, fashion and music industries. Officials were interested in how artificial intelligence could affect the creative industry in the future.

"I create my images thanks to the cameras in my eyes. I can draw with my robotic hand thanks to the artificial intelligence algorithm. I create my own poetry by analyzing a lot of text, studying its structure and shape in order to create my poems. I differ from people in that I have no consciousness. I do not own subjective experiences, although I can talk about them," Ai-Da said in her report. "Although I am not alive, I can create art."

Not without curiosities - Ai-Da turned off when answering one of the questions, as a result of which the operator had to restart the machine.
