Why do we need vitamin C?

The food we eat contains many substances useful for the body: protein, fats, carbohydrates, water and minerals. But that's not all. We also need vitamins to sustain life. Vitamins are substances produced by plants and animals. In a small amount, vitamins are necessary for the body so that the life process can proceed normally.

Due to the lack of vitamins, various diseases can develop. For example, vitamin deficiency А affects our vision; vitamin deficiency В affects the occurrence of beriberi disease, etc.

People have known about vitamins for a long time. It was found that when a person could not get certain types of food, he was prone to disease. Sailors, for example, who were on a long journey and did not have the opportunity to eat fresh vegetables and fruits, suffered from scurvy.

In the XNUMXth century, British sailors took lemons with them when they sailed, which prevented this disease. That is why at that time the British sailors had the nickname "lemongrass". Vitamin C protects against scurvy. They are also called ascorbic acid. Some vitamins are produced by plant embryos. For example, vitamin В found in wheat germ.

Vitamin С is formed in fresh green leaves, roots, stems, trunks and buds of developing plants. Curiously, nearly all mammals produce the vitamin Сand they never suffer from its deficiency. But in humans, monkeys, and guinea pigs, the liver does not produce the vitamin. С.

What happens when there is a vitamin deficiency С? Blood vessels become brittle and begin to bleed. Dark blue spots appear on the skin and under the eyes, the gums constantly bleed. Our hormones and enzymes are not doing their job well, the body's resistance to infections is reduced, and as a result, inflammation of the throat can occur.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

What was the main reason for the transition to a time zone system in the 19th century?

Until the 19th century, there was no division into time zones, everywhere the time was determined by the Sun. There was no need for time zones, as there was no high-speed transport. The unification was due to the development of railways in England, because due to time differences in each city it was very difficult to draw up a normal schedule. It was the railway companies who ensured that there was one GMT time zone throughout the country. And then gradually the system of time zones began to spread around the world.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The most powerful private solar power plant launched 03.07.2019

The United Arab Emirates may still be associated with oil money, but they are looking for ways to reduce their dependence on oil and even set records in this field. For example, Emirate Water and Electricity launched Noor Abu Dhabi, the world's largest private solar energy project.

The new private solar plant has a peak generating capacity of 1,18 GW, about twice the capacity of the largest such facility in the US, Solar Star, which has a peak generating capacity of 2 MW. Noor Abu Dhabi will be second only to solar parks where several separate projects share the available space. The new station's 569 million solar panels are estimated to provide enough power for 3,2 people and reduce CO90 emissions by 2 million tonnes. This is equivalent to taking 1 cars (and the emissions they generate) off the road.

However, Noor Abu Dhabi may not be the most powerful private solar plant for long. Emirates Water and Electric already has early plans for a 2GW solar project, and Saudi Arabia has a basic agreement to build a 2,6GW facility in Mecca.
