How were the Egyptian pyramids built?

No one knows the exact age of the pyramids. A thousand years before the birth of Christ, they were already ancient and mysterious. The construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza dates back to the 4th Dynasty of Pharaoh Cheops (about 2900 BC). Pyramids are meant to be tombs.

The ancient Egyptian pharaohs believed that their future lives depended on how well their bodies were preserved. Therefore, after death, their bodies were embalmed, and the mummies were placed in inner secret rooms under huge boulders. And even the internal approaches were walled up in order to hide the burial place from the robbers. The structure of such a huge structure was an incomprehensible manifestation of engineering art. For example, 100 slaves worked on the construction of a large pyramid for about 20 years. Each stone block was 7 meters high and 5,5 meters wide.

During the construction of the pyramids, limestone and granite were used, which were transported from the quarries along the Nile in special boats. This could be done only for three months during the spring flood. That is, it was necessary to carry out 500 such flights within 000 years in order to deliver the slabs necessary for the construction. The boats were unloaded on a special platform, from which a stone-paved road led directly to the pyramid. Then each block weighing about two tons was unloaded by a group of slaves onto special sledges. After that, another group of slaves dragged a huge stone with ropes along the flat surface of the road to the construction site. This procedure was repeated with each stone block. In total, there are about 20 of them in the Great Pyramid. As the pyramid grew, a giant inclined plane was also built. Large groups of slaves were pulling blocks to a new level of construction.

Each stone row of the pyramid, consisting of huge limestone blocks, tightly fit one to the other. The smooth surface of the blocks held them together even stronger than cement. Raw blocks were placed in the center of the pyramid; closer to the surface, the quality of processing increased.

And, finally, the front surface of the limestone slabs was polished so carefully that the joints between them were barely visible. The pyramid, as a rule, had 3 internal rooms, interconnected by passages.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why does Japan have two power grids with different frequencies?

Usually, within one state, the mains voltage has a strictly defined frequency - either 50 Hz or 60 Hz. And in Japan there are two systems - in the western part the frequency is 60 Hz, in the eastern part - 50 Hz, and there are four frequency converters between them. This state of affairs arose due to the fact that generators from the German company AEG were purchased for the Tokyo power system in 1895, and for Osaka a year later, American generators from General Electric were purchased. Since then, each of these networks has developed according to its own standards, and it turned out to be too costly to unify.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Massachusetts-style mosquito control 20.06.2008

US engineers have come up with a device that quickly destroys all mosquitoes in an area of 40 acres.

The problem of the summer struggle with the blood-sucking midge is faced not only by the inhabitants of the northern and temperate latitudes of Eurasia, but also on the other side of the globe, in North America. For example, American engineers from the Katz Inc. The state of Massachusetts decided to approach the seemingly unsolvable problem of the complete destruction of mosquitoes on a single piece of land. To do this, they created a vacuum cleaner trap.

"We disguised the vacuum cleaner as a home. To do this, it comes with a flavor containing lactic acid and octanol - the most attractive human odor components for mosquitoes. In addition, the device includes a burner and a propane tank. The gas burns and emits heat, as well as carbon dioxide The combination of heat, aromas, humidity and carbon dioxide is chosen so that the mosquito mistook the vacuum cleaner for a real home and fell into the trap, "says project leader Kristin Anderson.

Tests have shown that it is the increased carbon dioxide content around the new trap that is most attractive to mosquitoes. Every month, thousands of them found their end in a special drive.

Taking into account the fact that this insect rarely flies more than a kilometer from its birthplace, within a month after the start of round-the-clock operation of the device, the number of mosquitoes in an area of 40 acres around it sharply decreased.
