Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

soft exoskeleton 09.07.2013

For the first time, scientists and engineers have managed to create a "soft exoskeleton" based on the use of artificial muscles, simply put, this is, in fact, a "superman suit" that can be worn to increase strength and endurance.

The unusual unit was created by specialists from Harvard and Boston universities by order of the US Department of Defense. The device is an additional set of muscles that is powered by an air compressor. This fundamentally distinguishes this development from other analogues of the HULC type, which are equipped with heavy metal or plastic "bones" with hydraulic or electric drives. Therefore, the developers call their invention an "exosuit", because as such there is no skeleton in it: only a complex mesh that fits the legs and, with the help of pneumomuscles, helps human muscles bend and unbend the limbs.

The suit includes pneumatic muscles, a compressor, a pressure accumulator (in other words, a compressed air cylinder) and sensors that are installed on the knee, hip and ankle joints. Sensors continuously monitor the position of the legs and contract / straighten the pneumatic muscles at a strictly defined point in time.

Again, the exosuit acts like an extra set of muscles and makes a person stronger, as if he had been intensively engaged in physical training for several years. Theoretically, an exosuit can produce power several times greater than the strength of our muscles, but this raises the question of the permissible load on human bones and joints, because the suit does not have its own artificial skeleton. Nevertheless, for an adult well-trained person, the suit gives serious advantages in strength, even if it increases it by "only" 20-30%. In addition, with the advent of light and powerful muscles, it will be easy to combine an exosuit with an exoskeleton that takes on a load that is unbearable for a person.

According to the developers, the use of the exosuit is very natural: you just feel how the "magic power" helps you walk and lift heavy objects. When you take off the exosuit, you feel like you are losing additional strength. The unique "naturalness" of the exosuit is incomparable to heavy clumsy exoskeletons. Of course, the exosuit does not allow you to carry a load of 10 kg for 100 hours, but in the future it will be possible to hide it under your clothes. The exosuit weighs 7,5 kg and is so finely tuned that the wearer sometimes forgets it exists.

The developers believe that their exosuit can be useful in three areas. Primarily for military purposes, to help soldiers travel longer distances and carry heavier loads. In addition, it can be used in sports and rehabilitation medicine. In the latter case, the exosuit can help people who have not lost the ability to walk, but with weakened or atrophied muscles.
