Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Who invented the airplane?

Sometimes a discovery begins with an "idea". A person has an idea that people need some kind of mechanism or product, and he begins to "invent" it.

But as for the airplane, or, as they used to say, the airplane, this idea was one of the oldest and most secret for a person. The idea of flying has captivated man since antiquity. One of the most famous legends tells about Icarus, who attached wings to his body with wax and took off! However, as he approached the Sun, the wax melted and Icarus fell and died. But the dream remained. Icarus is a symbol of human striving for new heights.

Leonardo da Vinci, who was not only a great artist, but also an inventor, left behind sketches of an aircraft that used the muscular strength of a person. There were other dreamers who dreamed of the idea of an airplane hundreds of years ago!

The earliest aircraft did not have their own power. They were, in fact, giant kites or gliders. During the XNUMXth century, many experiments were carried out with them.

But no one has succeeded in making a heavier-than-air aircraft with its own power. In fact, it was problematic - is it possible to build such an apparatus at all. The first to prove that this could be done was Professor Samuel Langley of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. He built two flying machines, each 3,5 meters wide and 4,5 meters long, powered by a 1,5 horsepower steam engine. In 1896, these two models made successful flights. However, a test flight of Langley's life-sized aircraft ended in failure: it crashed on October 7, 1903.

On December 17 of the same year, the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright managed to make a successful flight in an aircraft heavier than air with its own power. In Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, they made one flight of 30 meters in 12 seconds and the second of 260 meters in 59 seconds. Thus was born the airplane, or plane!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Computer games for dogs 04.12.2022

If your dog is tired of playing catch-up and tug-of-war, he might be more interested in video games! Hong Kong-based startup Joipaw has developed a series of touchscreen games designed to keep our furry friends' minds active.

The founders of the company hope that video games will bring many benefits to dogs and help prevent a type of dementia known as cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) in dogs.

Dersim Avdar was inspired to create video games for dogs by his own dog, which he adopted in May 2021. The active dog quickly lost interest in puzzles and toys filled with treats and became restless, tearing up furniture and shoes of his owners and going to the bathroom on the floor of the apartment.

The man and his wife quickly realized that these were all symptoms of separation anxiety, and that Kavet (the dog's name) needed extra stimulation when the owners left the house.

Then Avdar read a study from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, which claimed that if older dogs played games on the touch screen, it could prevent cognitive decline. The paper stated that unlike puppies or young dogs, older dogs are almost never trained or mentally challenged.

So Avdar came up with the idea of creating a special console for dogs, which could serve as a tool for preventive care for older dogs, and would keep hyperactive young dogs busy.

To date, the console supports games like "Bay the Mole", when several moles appear on the screen at the same time, which you need to have time to grab, as well as pinball.

The platform also has the function of tracking the dog when the owner leaves the house. By the way, the owners can also play, and even compare their results with the dog! Joipaw also hopes to include games in the future where dogs can play against their owners.

Right now, all games are still in the testing phase, but they are all designed to be played on a touch screen that you can lick. The Joipaw team notes that dogs can be trained to work with a screen by smearing it with something delicious!

Co-founder Dersim Avdar said that when testing games with nearly two dozen dogs, "the hardest step" was to gradually cut back on the tasty rewards to get the dogs to play on their own. But, when this milestone is overcome, there comes "a magical moment when you see the light in the eyes of animals." By the way, extra treats are given out from the console when the dog wins the game.
