When did weddings start?

The wedding as a custom has been around for a very long time. Three stages can be distinguished here. The first, when an ancient man simply stole a woman - his future wife. Then there was marriage by contract or for ransom. The groom bought the bride. And finally, there was a marriage based on mutual love. But even today the remains of the first two stages have been preserved.

The expression "give away the bride" is a holdover from the days when the bride was actually sold. The role of the best man in a modern wedding originates in the past, when a well-armed warrior helped the groom to carry the bride he had stolen. And the honeymoon symbolizes the period when the newlywed hid his stolen bride until the relatives got tired of looking for her. Playing a modern wedding, we do not imagine that the beginning of this word is connected with the history of marriages.

The Anglo-Saxons under the word wed (combine) meant money, horses and other livestock, which the groom gave as a guarantee, a pledge, in order to prove to her father the seriousness of his intention in buying the bride. And when it comes to buying wedding suits, we return to ancient, forgotten meanings. For example, the custom for a bride to wear something blue for a wedding was in ancient Israel. In those days, the bride had to have a blue ribbon in her dress, because this color meant purity, love and fidelity.

The expression "give the bride in marriage" (that is, to a certain man) also goes back to the times when the bride was a commodity. The custom of having a bride at the wedding of her friends goes back to the time of ancient Rome, when exactly 10 witnesses had to be present at a solemn wedding ceremony. The presence of a horseshoe in a modern wedding cortege also has its own history.

They say that there was an ancient custom - to change or give away horseshoes, which meant a change of power. Thus, a horseshoe means that now the husband has more power over the bride than her father.

Which American president was an inventor?

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the only American president to receive a patent for an invention.

He came up with a device consisting of floats to raise the ship above the shoals. The patent and model of the invention (at that time applicants were required to submit a working model of their invention) were found in the US Patent Office's vaults and then displayed in a museum.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

IBM Watson Discovery Advisor service 08.09.2014

IBM has unveiled a new addition to the cognitive capabilities of the Watson supercomputer that allows researchers to accelerate the pace of scientific research by finding previously unexplored connections when analyzing big data.

The new IBM Watson Discovery Advisor service is available in the cloud and is designed to help scientists work on their research. The service reduces the time required to confirm hypotheses and formulate conclusions from months to days and from days to hours, opening up new opportunities for researchers and developers.

Based on the ability of the Watson supercomputer to understand natural languages, Watson Discovery Advisor similarly understands the language of science, such as how chemical elements interact, and provides professionals with a full-featured research tool in the life sciences and other fields.

Leading research organizations, including Baylor College of Medicine, Johnson & Johnson, and the Genome Research Center in New York, are already using Watson Discovery Advisor to accelerate the development of scientific projects.

New technologies can be used in all areas where the analysis of a large amount of information is required. Cognitive computing will allow experts to work with huge amounts of data, including the products of the intellectual work of many experts. Watson can be used:

- to help developers of medicines needed to save the lives of many people;
- expanding the analytical capabilities of financial consultants;
- improving the strategy of M&A lawyers through a comprehensive legal assessment and analysis of documents;
- for the work of government analysts in areas related to security;
- to create new recipes. Chefs can use Watson to create new dishes, learn cooking principles and ingredients, and access a huge recipe database of food compatibility, chemistry and cuisines from around the world.

IBM Watson Discovery Advisor can transform data-driven industries and professions such as law, biotechnology, education, chemistry, metal fabrication, scientific research, engineering, and forensics.
