What is seasickness?

Seasickness is associated with the concepts of balance and dizziness. Our balance organs contain stiff hairs surrounded by fluid. When we move in any direction, the fluid moves the hairs. These hairs send a signal to the brain that gives us the sensation of moving in that direction. Under normal conditions, this fluid, called lymph, and the movement of the hairs are such that our body can easily adapt to changes, and we manage to maintain balance.

But what happens on the ship? As the deck changes position under our feet, our lymph also sways up and down, from side to side. Sensitive hairs also oscillate from side to side. Therefore, the signals they send to the brain also switch from one to the other. As soon as some kind of “order” enters the brain, another, completely opposite “order” immediately follows.

The ship's position changes so frequently that the brain receives signals that contradict each other! The result is confusion in this part of our nervous system. Therefore, we soon have dizziness, headache, darkening and sparks in the eyes, cold sweat, gagging and vomiting - that is, all that seasickness consists of.

Unfortunately, the only remedy for seasickness may be to bring the lymph and balance organs to a calm state or to prevent such a situation when signals from the balance organs affect us. All known remedies for seasickness affect the body in the second way. Until now, no remedy is known that would make the hairs and lymph stop moving.

Therefore, a remedy for motion sickness has the following effect: it paralyzes the part of the brain through which the signal passes, or paralyzes the vomiting center in the brain, or desensitizes certain nerves.

One of the most effective ways to counter seasickness is to go to the most stable part of the ship, to the center, and stay there, trying to move as little as possible. It is also important to remember that one must refrain from fear, because fear and imagination only increase seasickness!

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Economic technology of carbon capture by algae 06.05.2022

London-based startup Brilliant Planet has developed algae-based carbon capture and storage technology that will cost between $50 and $100 per tonne of carbon.

The technology based on algae blooms has the prospect of scaling up to billions of tons per year with negligible energy requirements. The cultivation of algae will contribute to the deacidification of sea water, which will contribute to a more efficient absorption of carbon by the ocean. The algae will be grown in large, open, low-density ponds filled with seawater.

Algae are inherently more efficient biological carbon sequestration machines than trees or other plants because their entire surface is capable of photosynthesis and they do not waste resources creating trunks, roots or branches. They also grow and reproduce very quickly under the right conditions.

The company uses flat deserts along the coasts and local strains of algae that are well adapted to the local climate and conditions. The next step is to install a series of pumps that pump cold, nutrient-rich water from the seabed into a series of containers and ponds.

Pumps account for most of the energy required by this system, but they can be powered by solar panels. One glass of "inoculant" algae in the first stage multiplies rapidly under the right conditions to fill four 12 square meter ponds. Optimal conditions are maintained using proprietary sensor technology, daily satellite imagery, public weather information, and proprietary software based on cellular-level biology simulations and ocean updrafts.

Algae blooms are supported with inexpensive, abundant supplements, and the use of artificial intelligence will help boost yields. After maturation, the algae are harvested from the largest bodies of water using fine mesh filters and dried in the open air of the desert. This dried, salty, carbon-rich biomass is then sent to a shallow desert grave approximately 1-4m deep, where it remains virtually trapped for thousands of years.

Deacidified sea water without nutrients is returned to the ocean and has a positive effect on corals, shellfish, etc.
