Dolichos (hyacinth beans), Dolichos lablab. Methods of application, origin of the plant, range, botanical description, cultivation

Dolichos (lobia, kokornik, hyacinth beans)

Seeds and green beans of dolichos are used for food, for feeding animals, and also as a green manure crop. Seeds are distinguished by high palatability, proteins are well balanced in amino acid composition, the content of lysine in them is 6%. The seeds contain 28% protein, about 60% carbohydrates, 3,2% fat, 7,6% minerals.

Green mass has good taste and is well eaten by livestock, it contains 13-15% protein. Hyacinth bean seeds are used to produce plant agglutinins, which cause red blood cells to clump together (agglutinate). Agglutinins are used to determine blood groups. Some varieties contain cyanide glucoside, which is destroyed by prolonged cooking of seeds.

In modern world agriculture, dolichos culture is distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical latitudes - in Africa (Sudan, Angola, Kenya, Egypt), in Asia (India, Myanmar, Vietnam) and to a lesser extent on the American continent (Brazil, Colombia, Cuba ). Origin not established. It grows wild in India and Africa.

In countries with a hot climate, dolichos is cultivated both in pure form and in mixtures with cereals.

The genus Dolichos L. includes more than 30 species. In culture, hyacinth, or Egyptian, beans (Dolichos lablab L) are of the greatest importance.

Dolichos is a perennial, climbing plant, cultivated as an annual, herbaceous stem from 1,5 to 10 m long or more. Inflorescence - axillary, many-flowered raceme (up to 40 flowers). The flowers are large, white, purple and yellow. Legumes are short, wide, flattened, with a beak-shaped point, 2-4 seeds. Seeds are elliptical, compressed, with a helmet-shaped seed scar. The weight of 1000 seeds is from 200 to 400 g. The color of the seeds is white, black, brown.

The duration of the growing season in dolichos is from 2,5 months in early-ripening forms to 7 in late-ripening ones. The culture is cross-pollinated. The flowers do not close at night after opening and remain open until wilting.

Dolichos (lobia, kokornik, hyacinth beans)

The plant is thermophilic. Seeds begin to germinate at a temperature of 13-14 °C, the optimum temperature for germination is 22-27 °C. During flowering and fruit formation, the temperature should not fall below 18 ° C.

Dolichos is very sensitive to lack of moisture in the initial growing season. After closing the rows, its drought resistance increases. The crop vegetates relatively well in tropical regions with relatively little rainfall. In the dry tropics and subtropics, dolichos is grown under irrigation.

Dolichos is a short-day culture.

Dolichos grows well on ferralitic, alluvial soils, etc. It does not tolerate acidic and strongly alkaline soils, as well as poorly drained ones.

Dolichos (Dolichos lablab), also known as lobia, kokornik or hyacinth beans, is a plant from the legume family that grows in tropical and subtropical regions.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing dolichos:

Cultivation:

  • Dolichos is best grown in warm climates with high humidity. It prefers fertile soil with good drainage and moderate moisture.
  • Plant dolichos seeds 3-5 cm deep into the soil, leaving a distance of 30-45 cm between them. Dolichos plants require regular watering.
  • Dolichos can be grown both outdoors and in pots. If you are growing dolichos in pots, use soil that drains water quickly.

Workpiece:

  • Dolichos is used in the food industry, especially as animal feed. It can also be used to make flour and protein concentrate.
  • Harvest the dolichos pods when they are fully ripe, but not overripe. Make sure the pods are intact and show no signs of rot or other damage.
  • Separate the beans from the pods, then grind them and use them to make flour or protein concentrate. For use as animal feed, dolichos pods can be harvested and used whole.

Storage:

  • Dolichos is stored in a cool and dry place to preserve its quality and freshness. Store dolichos in an airtight container to avoid contact with moisture and oxygen.
  • Dolichos can be stored for up to several months if properly packaged and stored in dry conditions.
  • Before use, check dolichos for damage or hardening. If dolichos is hardened, grind it in a blender or coffee grinder to restore its texture.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>
