Legends and myths: In ancient Greek mythology, it was believed that the raven eye was created from a drop of blood from the goddess Aphrodite when she was injured while hunting. In Christian symbolism, he was often associated with sadness and death, since his four petals were associated with the four evangelists.

Botanical description of the plant, area, methods of application, cultivation The plant forms a whorl of four leaves emerging from one center, hence its Russian and Latin specific names. Perennial herbaceous plant 10-40 cm high. Rhizome horizontal, long, creeping. The stem is solitary, erect, without leaves in the lower part and without pubescence (like all parts of the plant). The leaves form a whorl of four (rarely 5-6) crosswise almost sessile leaves up to 10 cm long. The leaves are oval or ovate, entire, short-petiolate (sessile), pointed at the end; dyed green. The flower is solitary, located at the top of the stem. In the center of the flower there is a ball of ovary, painted in a dark purple hue, from which eight narrow stamens, four narrow inconspicuous petals and four green sepals extend (the size of the sepals is slightly larger than the petals). Perianth two-row 4 outer leaves lanceolate, green and 4 inner (smaller, narrow-linear, yellowish-green). Stamens eight, located at the base of the tepals. There are four columns, fused at the base. The raven eye begins to bloom in May and ends in June-July. Like all other parts of the raven eye, its flower is poisonous, so it should be handled with extreme care. The entire above-ground part of the plant dies off at the first frost, leaving an underground rhizome, which next spring gives a new above-ground shoot. The fruit is a spherical four-celled juicy berry containing many seeds, about 1 cm in diameter, shiny, black, with a bluish bloom. The fruits ripen in late July - early August. The fruits are deadly poisonous. It is distributed almost throughout Europe (except for the arid southern regions), in the Mediterranean, in Western and Eastern Siberia, and in the Caucasus. It grows in deciduous forests and mixed forests on fertile loamy soil, it is also found in coniferous forests, among the bushes. Prefers damp, shady places, thickets of bushes, shady ravines. It also grows in the forest-steppe. Crow's eye four-leaf contains vitamin C, flavonoids, coumarin, organic acids (citric acid, malic acid), pectin, paridin glycoside. The rhizomes, leaves and fruits of the plant contain the poisonous saponin paristifin. The rhizomes also contain steroidal saponins and alkaloids. The four-leafed raven eye is a deadly poisonous plant, therefore it is prohibited in official medicine. The whole plant is poisonous, especially the rhizomes and berries. All parts of the plant contain saponins, steroids, pyridine glycoside. The herb has been found to contain substances called flavonoids, and the herb also contains coumarins and vitamin C. The rhizomes are rich in alkaloids. Children are especially often poisoned, who are attracted to the shiny beautiful berries of the crow's eye. Leaves act on the central nervous system, fruits - on the heart, rhizomes cause vomiting. Symptoms of poisoning are abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, bouts of dizziness, convulsions, disruption of the heart until it stops. In case of poisoning, it is necessary to wash the stomach from the poisons present. Inside you need to enter anesthesin and some drug that will restore the work of the heart, for example, strophanthin. Crow's eye drugs are categorically not used during pregnancy, during breastfeeding, in children under the age of 12, with hypertension and insomnia. All parts of the plant are poisonous (berries and rhizomes are of particular danger), but this did not become an obstacle for folk healers who have been using the aerial part of the plant (grass and berries) for the treatment of various diseases for a long time. Crow's eye herb four-leafed is harvested during the flowering period and is used for the preparation of infusions and tinctures, mainly fresh; berries are harvested after ripening - in August.
