Chemical composition: Hellebore reddening contains ranunculide glycosides, phytoncides, saponins and other biologically active substances. All parts of the plant are considered poisonous. Economic value: In medicine, hellebore roots are used for the production of medicines, including antitumor drugs. The plant is also used for ornamental purposes, as an ornamental deciduous shrub with ornamental flowers in early spring. Legends, myths, symbolism: In ancient Greek mythology, hellebore was associated with the hero Hercules, who used it to induce sleep in the three-headed dog Cerberus, who guarded the gates of hell. Reddish hellebore (reddish hellebore), Helleborus purpurascens. Description, illustrations of the plant Reddish hellebore (reddish hellebore), Helleborus purpurascens W. Et K. Botanical description, range and habitats, chemical composition, use in medicine and industry Perennial small herbaceous plant with a short horizontal multi-headed rhizome, of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). The aerial part of the plant is represented by 2-4 large basal peculiarly dissected leaves and a short flower arrow bearing 1-3 flowers at the top. Sepals 5 - petaloid, greenish-yellowish; petals in the form of small nectaries. The fruit is numerous leaflets, the seeds are oblong. Blooms in December - March. Range and habitats. The reddish hellebore comes from Eastern Europe, grows in beech, hornbeam, oak, often sparse forests and in thickets of shrubs that grow after deforestation, in the western part of Ukraine (in the Carpathians and Transcarpathia). It rises in the mountains to the upper border of the forest. When grown in gardens, it often runs wild, spreading easily. Tolerates considerable shade, but prefers well-lit slopes. Undemanding to soils. Sometimes dominates the grass cover. Chemical composition. The rhizomes and roots of the plant contain 0,2% cardiac glycosides desglycogellebrin (corelborin K), which splits into 1-rhamnose and hellebrigenin upon hydrolysis. Hellebrine bioside (corelborin II) was isolated from the roots of hellebore blushing in an amount of 0,1% from dry roots and 0,2% from fresh roots. During hydrolysis, it breaks down into rhamnose and glucose. Application in medicine. The cardiac glycosides contained in hellebore (corelborin K and corelborin P) belong to the group of glycosides with a 6-membered lactone ring and in this respect are close to the glycosides of sea onions. The biological activity of corelborin K is 88000. ICE in 1 g of crystalline substance, corelborin P-66 000 ICE. They, like other serum glycosides, have an effect on the central and peripheral nervous system, diuresis, etc. But the main point of application of their action is the heart. They enhance the contractile properties of the myocardium, have a positive ino- and tonotropic and negative chronotropic effect. Other uses. Often grown as an ornamental throughout Europe. Valued for early spring flowering. Several ornamental hybrid varieties have been bred. Authors: Turova A.D., Sapozhnikova E.N.
