Pregnant women should talk less on cell phones

The impact of mobile phone radiation on humans has been studied for a long time, and so far no clear arguments have been made either in favor of their safety or in favor of a potential threat to health. A new study from Yale Medical School suggests that the danger still exists, and that pregnant women should generally isolate themselves from the outside world if possible.

According to the results of the study, the exposure of a woman to a mobile phone during pregnancy can affect the development of the brain in the fetus and lead to the so-called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the child. However, scientists immediately stipulate that there are no reasons for panic yet, the objects of the study were not people, but mice.

As part of the experiment, scientists placed a mobile phone with the sound off on the surface of a cage with pregnant mice, the device was active during the entire pregnancy of females. After the cubs were born and raised, the researchers measured the electrical activity of their brains, as well as conducted a series of psychological and behavioral tests. They found that mice exposed to RF radiation tended to be hyperactive and had reduced memory capacity. The head of the research team, Professor Hugh S Taylor, is confident that mobile phone radiation has influenced the development of neurons in the lobes of the prefrontal cortex of the brain.

ADHD, according to many scientists, has its roots in this part of the brain. So despite the fact that rodent pregnancies last only 19 days, and the cubs are born with brains less developed than human babies, Professor Taylor is confident that pregnant women need to limit cell phone use.

Epidemiologists have long known that the type A influenza virus is the culprit in all major influenza pandemics, occurring not only in humans, but also in many other mammals, as well as in birds, such as ducks. Another virus, type B, has so far only been found in humans.

Virologist Albert Osterhaus, working at the University of Amsterdam (Holland), recently found influenza type B virus in seals from the North Sea. More precisely, the virus was found in one seal, and in the other - only antibodies to it, but this indicates that the organism of the sea animal has already met with this disease.

The strain of the virus found is almost identical to the one that caused an epidemic among humans in 1995. It seems that it was then that the virus was also introduced to seals, since blood samples from North Sea seals collected before 1995 and stored in a special freezer do not contain the virus, and out of 391 samples taken later, the virus was found in eight. Blood samples are regularly taken from the seals to monitor marine pollution and have material for comparison over the years.

Researchers believe that if you don't want to catch the flu, it's best to stay away from seals just in case.
