Chickweed medium (louse), Stellaria media (L.) Cyr. Description, habitats, nutritional value, culinary use

Chickweed medium (wood louse)

Chickweed is an annual herbaceous plant from the clove family with a recumbent knotted stem and small ovate-pointed leaves.

Stem length 10-30 cm. Flowers are very small, white. The fruits are dark achene. Blooms from June to September.

The life of the plant lasts only 3-4 weeks. To replace the deceased, new plants grow from seeds and from roots that have sprouted twigs in contact with the ground.

Starfish grows near housing, in gardens, in vegetable gardens, along ditches, ravines, in damp glades, along river banks, near roads. When weeding the beds, she first falls under the arms.

It is used as a fodder plant (it is added to feed for piglets and chickens). It is interesting that it is possible to predict the weather from it: if in the morning after sunrise the corolla of the flower did not open and rise, then it will rain in the afternoon. It probably received its second name - wood lice - stellaria, probably because it is always wet: both after rain and in dry weather (it absorbs water not only by its roots, but also by the surface of the hairs covering the stems).

The chemical composition is little studied. It is known that the amount of vitamin C in the green parts of the plant reaches 65 mg%, carotene - more than 23 mg% Green parts of the plant without roots can be used for salads, boiled - instead of spinach in borscht, vinaigrettes and as a seasoning for second courses.

Chickweed collected from calcareous soils can cause allergies - skin redness and itching. This suggests that not all types of it have been sufficiently studied, the methods of processing and the time of collection have not been fully elucidated, although chickweed has long been used in nutrition.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Bracelet shoots antiseptic 27.12.2020

An international team of engineers created the SprayCare wristband. It will disinfect hands and objects where it is not always convenient to get an antiseptic. For example, in public transport, elevator, shop or car. This is reported by Naked Science.

On the body of the device there is a small bottle with an antiseptic and a button that sprays the product. According to the developers, they noticed how often they touch dirty surfaces during the day, and decided to create a simple device that will help them feel safe.

The bracelet is a vial of antiseptic attached to a silicone strap. The size of the device is close to the Apple Watch. Inside there is a sprayer and a pump that starts a single button. After pressing it, the device sprays antiseptic on any surface within 3 seconds at a distance of up to 1,5 m.

The antiseptic in the bottle is enough for about 40 applications, after which the person will be able to add the desired product (if it is not very thick). In addition, the bottle can be filled with insect repellent, perfume or essential oil - depending on the need. So it will remain relevant even after the pandemic. Engineers suggest using it as a self-defense tool: just change the antiseptic for pepper spray liquid.
