Spider silk is an amazing material. It is said to be stronger than steel, tougher than Kevlar and lighter than carbon fiber. Clothing is already being made from it, and some fabric manufacturers - for example, Bolt Threads in the USA - believe that the future of the textile industry lies precisely with this material, or rather, with its synthetic counterpart. After all, breeding spider farms is too impractical.
Engineers have been trying for decades to create a synthetic imitation of spider silk from genetically engineered bacteria, yeast, and even goat milk, but have always failed. Part of the problem is that the genetic information of the scaffold is a long chain of repetitive DNA. Combining spider silk genetic material with the organisms tested caused the cellular machinery of those organisms to inadvertently alter or disrupt the web's DNA sequences.
This time, the researchers precisely cut the repetitive DNA into pieces and "embedded" each repetitive piece into an E. coli bacterium. These smaller fragments were less susceptible to further change in the bacteria, and each microbe followed the genetic instructions to "make" a short strand of silk. The researchers added a chemical label to the end of each strand, which glued the individual fibers together.
The tensile strength of the resulting thread was 1,03 gigapascals - about the same as that of natural spider silk. A strand of synthetic silk can stretch up to 18% before breaking, just like a natural skeleton thread.
