How does the heart work?

The heart of an adult is about the size of a clenched fist. But in 24 hours it generates enough energy to lift 68 kilograms of cargo, or the weight of a locomotive, 30 centimeters off the ground. In twenty-four hours, it pumps about 16 liters of blood.

This amazing organ, whose weight can range from 225 to 340 grams, resembles a two-story house in structure. Each of its parts has a room above, the auricle, as well as a room below, the right and left ventricles. There is a door on each side between the auricle to the ventricle called a valve, but there is no valve between the two halves. There are exits from the ventricles and arteries, and entrances from the veins to the ears. All doors in a healthy heart fit very well, because the blood expelled by the heart does not have to go back through the same door. Valves open and close with every heartbeat.

In practice, the heart has two pumps, one on each side. The left side picks up oxygenated blood from the lungs and drives it through the body. The right side receives it back with less oxygen but more carbon dioxide and drives it to the lungs. The two upper chambers, the auricles, have thinner walls because they pump blood only short distances into the lower chambers. The right ventricle has thicker walls because it pumps blood to the lungs.

The most important part of the heart is the left ventricle, which has the thickest walls because it has to pump blood the longest distance. The heart contracts and unclenches about 100 times a day. In childhood, the pulse is 90-100 beats per minute, and in adults - 70-80 beats per minute. When you make some kind of effort, such as running, the frequency of impacts can increase by about three and a half times.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How is the German attack on the USSR connected with the excavations of the tomb of Tamerlane?

On June 21, 1941, a group of Soviet scientists opened the grave of Tamerlane in Samarkand. There are several legends about the prophecies associated with this, which are not documented. According to one, on the gravestone itself there was an inscription about the prohibition of autopsy and punishment for those who violate the ban. Another story tells of three elders who warned the expedition that if the tomb of Tamerlane was dug up, a war would begin. As you know, on June 22, Nazi Germany attacked the USSR. However, the proximity of these events is nothing more than a coincidence, because the plan of attack was approved by Hitler long before June 1941.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Growing wood without a tree 12.08.2022

American scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have invented a way to grow wood in the laboratory.

To do this, the researchers first isolated cells from the leaves of young Zinnia elegans plants. The cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then transferred to a gel-based medium that contains nutrients and two different hormones. Adjusting hormone levels at this point in the process allows researchers to fine-tune the physical and mechanical properties of the plant cells that grow in this nutrient-rich broth.

The cell culture solution is then extruded into a specific shape using a 3D printer and left in the dark to incubate for three months. At the end, the material is dehydrated and sent for research.

"The idea is that you can grow plant materials in exactly the form you need, without the need for any kind of mechanical processing that consumes energy and produces waste," the scientists say.

Scientists hope that with the help of their technology in the future it will be possible to refuse cutting down trees for the manufacture of wooden products, which is important for preserving the environment.
