The transfer of heat by moving layers of gaseous or liquid matter is called convection. This phenomenon is of great practical use. So, for example, in a heated room there is a circulation (circulation) of warm and cold air, as a result of which the room heats up. With central water heating, water particles heated from below are displaced upwards by heavier cold parts. There is a continuous circulation of water, as a result of which the pipes that heat the room are heated.

Using this phenomenon, you can arrange original turntables - a mill (a) and a snake (b). Their device is clear from the drawings.

Carousel on a lamp

Make a rotating lampshade from thin paper or tracing paper and decorate with beautiful ornaments or drawings. To reduce friction when rotating the lampshade, attach one part of the clothes button in the center of its bottom on the underside with wood glue or thread. Hang the lampshade so that the tip of the wire stand gets into the recess of the button.

Carousel on a lamp

Cut out the upper bottom of the lampshade with teeth, which are glued to the conical part. Along the bottom radii, at an equal distance from each other, make eight equal cuts. The length of each slot should be approximately equal to half the radius of the bottom.

Move the slots in the bottom apart: press one edge of each slot down, the other up. The diameter of the bottom of the lampshade should be about three times the diameter of the light bulb.

Instead of a button, you can stick a thick cardboard circle or foil in the center of the bottom with a recess made with a blunt nail or stick.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Contact lenses that project information into the eyes 27.11.2014

Scientists from Princeton (USA) have developed contact lenses that can display visual information directly to the eyes. The project is funded by the US Air Force. The US military hopes to get an innovative device for military pilots as a result.

American scientist Michael McAlpine (Michael McAlpine) and his colleagues have developed a 3D printer that can print contact lenses from five layers, one of which emits light on the surface of the eye. The contact lenses themselves are made from a transparent polymer, inside of which there are several components: silver nanoparticle wiring, nanoscale quantum dot LEDs, and organic polymers, which acted as a material for microcircuits.

According to McAlpine, the hardest part was choosing chemicals that could ensure strong contact between the layers. Another difficulty was the unique shape of human eyeballs: the developers had to monitor the production of a contact lens using two video cameras to ensure it was compatible with the test subject's eye.

It is assumed that the new development will be useful, first of all, for pilots: contact lenses will be able to transmit information about the course of the flight directly to the eyes. In addition, lenses can be embedded with sensors that will detect chemical biomarkers of eye fatigue.

There were also skeptics who doubt the practical value of the unusual development. The problem is that the voltage required to run an LED display is too high, says physicist Raymond Murray of Imperial College London. It will also be necessary to ensure the safety of materials. For example, it is known that cadmium selenide, from which quantum dots are produced, is extremely harmful to health.
