What deeds immortalized Magdeburg burgomaster Otto von Guericke?

The name of Otto von Guericke (1602-1686), who was elected mayor of the German city of Magdeburg in 1646, would have long since sunk into oblivion if not for his passion for physics.

Guericke was an inventive experimenter and, having learned about the discovery of Torricelli in 1650, he was eager to see for himself the possibility of the formation of a void. For this purpose, he filled a wine barrel with water, connected a pump to it and tried to pump out the liquid. As soon as the pumping started, the rims cracked. The experience with a more durable barrel ended the same. Guericke carried out the third experiment already with a copper vessel. The piston gradually pulled out of the pump went at first easily, then more and more difficult, and then, according to Guericke himself, "suddenly, to everyone's horror, the ball shattered into small pieces with a terrible noise, as if it had been dropped from the highest tower."

The result of this experiment was not only confirmation of the existence of a vacuum discovered by Torricelli, but also the invention of an air pump. Guericke's predilection for theatricality prompted him to the famous experiment with the "Magdeburg hemispheres", held in 1654 in Regensburg in the presence of the emperor and the princes. After these two metal hemispheres were tightly applied to each other and air was pumped out of the resulting ball, they could not be separated even by 16 horses pulling in opposite directions.

Having clearly demonstrated the existence of air pressure, Guericke in a number of other experiments established the elasticity and weight of air, its ability to support combustion, conduct sound, and the presence of water vapor in the air.

Erike created one of the first electric machines - a rotating ball of sulfur, rubbed with hands, and discovered the phenomenon of electric repulsion, as well as electric glow. He was the first (in 1660) to build a water barometer and use it to predict the weather.

Besides Dr. Watson, what two doctors are closely related to the character of Sherlock Holmes?

Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired to create Sherlock Holmes by Dr. Joseph Bell, who worked at the Royal Hospital of Edinburgh and was distinguished by his ability to make subtle inferences from the smallest observations. In turn, Sherlock Holmes became one of the basis for creating the character of Gregory House, a brilliant doctor from the television series of the same name. Like Holmes, House likes only difficult cases, is cynical, has a passion for music and is addicted to drugs.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Named the fastest animal 12.11.2016

Until now, it was believed that the speed record in flight among living creatures belongs to swifts (Apus apus), which rush in the air faster than 100 kilometers per hour.

However, scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Ornithology and their colleagues from the United States found that swifts have a serious competitor - and this is not even a bird, but a Brazilian folded bat. The separation is serious: the maximum speed of the folded lip in flight exceeds 160 km / h.

Swifts are the fastest of all birds in horizontal flight (up to 110 km / h), peregrine falcons develop up to 300 km / h in a steep peak. The wings of most bats do not allow them to develop such speeds, but the Brazilian folded lips have special aerodynamics: in horizontal flight they are 1,5 times faster than swifts.

As a rule, the animal flies faster, the narrower and longer its wing: it is from these parameters that scientists predicted the excellent aerodynamics of Brazilian bats.
