The sun is always a welcome guest. And in the city, and especially when traveling to the countryside. But after all and from guests sometimes it would be desirable to retire. From the sun - too, when there is too much of it, on an exhaustingly hot summer day. We are looking for a saving shade, a secluded corner somewhere under the canopy of trees. However, not every summer cottage has a sprawling crown that gives the desired coolness.

The Polish magazine Sam Zrobi proposes to build a simple shade-forming structure - a pergola. It is a light trellis structure, which itself scatters the sun's rays, and serves as a light frame for a translucent green tent of climbing plants.

Outwardly, the pergola resembles an unfinished building - rare racks support an uncovered slatted roof. However, nothing more is required: a row of ropes or wire is stretched between the racks - and the creepers that have climbed along them form green lacy walls that will cover from the wind, and the roof sieve, together with the tops of plants, will protect from scorching rays.

Although the structure is lightweight, it still needs a reliable foundation - concrete columns buried in the ground. They are cast right on the spot: a cement mortar with a filler of crushed stone or broken brick is laid in the holes dug in advance. It is desirable that the top of the column rises somewhat above the ground, for which the neck of the hole should be built up like a box without a bottom.

A metal thrust bearing is inserted into the solution that has begun to thicken along the axis of the column. This is a piece of steel strip with a bifurcated shank at the bottom, and holes for bolts in the upper part for connection with pergola uprights.

The top of the racks on both sides is clamped with longitudinal lags, nailed. The length of the lag must be calculated so that in case of splicing, their joints fall on the nearest rack.

Base: 1 - foundation column, 2 - thrust bearing.

Grooves are sawn along the entire length in the logs at equal distances - under the lathing slats, in which the same counters are prepared: when they are combined, we get a "lock" connection that does not require any additional fasteners.

After assembling the entire structure, it remains to stretch a rope or wire between the racks; the number of rows is arbitrary, more dependent on the type of plants climbing along them.

To protect the wood of the building, it is desirable to cover it with drying oil, and even better - with oil paints of calm or, conversely, bright colors.

From plants for a green tent, traditional ivy or hops are suitable. You can also use lemongrass, which has recently become more common among summer residents and gardeners (it will also give an increase in vitamins) or clematis, wild grapes or village bindweed familiar to everyone since childhood.

The dimensions shown in the figures are mostly indicative, since they largely depend on the location and specific purpose of the pergola: after all, it can be a romantic gazebo, a summer kitchen, a car park, and a decorative corridor path from the gate to the porch of the house.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Smart umbrellas will replace meteorologists 25.03.2016

French company Wezzoo has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for the production of a smart umbrella that will warn of rain 15 minutes before it starts.

What is an umbrella? This is a thing that you never have with you if it suddenly starts to rain. And it's also something you'll probably forget somewhere: on a train, in a restaurant, at a meeting...

This is how the "oombrela" project was born. The French company Wezzoo, a leading social real-time weather service, has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding site to raise funds for the production of a smart umbrella that will be ready to solve the two problems listed above. If it is going to rain where you are, the umbrella will warn you about it 15 minutes before it starts by sending a notification to the mobile application. If you forget your umbrella somewhere, the mobile application will know where it is and show you on the map how to get to it.

Moreover, the project will offer its user an entire weather station: light, humidity, temperature and pressure sensors are enclosed in a "capsule" - a small electronic device located in the handle of an umbrella. Each user of the project becomes a member of the community by uploading detailed weather data to the cloud.

The capsule has a buzzer and a small flashlight that will let you know in the rain about an incoming call or an important notification.
