How did Henry Ford explain the reason for the cessation of production of his favorite model of his car?

In 1908, one of the founders of the American automobile industry, Henry Ford (1863-1947), launched a model of his Ford Lizzie car (model T, engine power 20,4 horsepower, maximum speed 65 kilometers per hour).

Due to the low price ($850), high reliability and efficiency, the car was in great demand. Considering the Model T to be the ideal car for the people, Ford did not want to change anything in its design. Engineers who dared to propose any changes, even in the external appearance of the car, were fired by Ford. When in 1912 one of the leading designers of the company, taking advantage of the temporary absence of the owner, made a copy of the new model, Ford was so furious that he personally destroyed this copy, tearing off the doors with his bare hands, breaking the windows and jumping on the roof and hood.

However, in the early 1920s, sales of the Model T began to decline. Ford's son spoiled relations with his father, persuading him to switch to a new model. Finally, in 1927, Ford was forced to stop production of the Model T (a total of 15 million cars were produced) and transfer the factory to a new model.

When snide journalists asked Ford why he took the Model T off the assembly line anyway, he shrugged: "The only downside to this perfect car is that people stopped buying it."

While Ford persisted, General Motors took the lead in the automotive industry.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Translator Pen 23.02.2001

In Russia, a "miracle pen" will soon appear - "C-Pen", which can not only scan text, but also translate it from English into Russian and vice versa.

"Si-Pen" does not exceed the size of an ordinary ballpoint pen. This portable device allows you to scan, process and store up to 2 thousand pages of text in memory, as well as transfer it via infrared to a personal computer.

A miniature digital camera is built into the pen, which photographs the fragments of text of interest, the FineReader recognition system translates them into a text file, and the Lingovo electronic dictionary translates the text if necessary. In addition to Russian specialists, Swedish specialists took part in the development of the Sea Pen.
