Questions for quiz and self-education Did you know? How did the gift of Soviet schoolchildren to the American ambassador in 1945 help our special services? In 1945, Soviet schoolchildren presented the American ambassador with a wooden panel made of precious woods depicting the US coat of arms. Neither the schoolchildren nor the ambassador knew that a listening device was installed in the panel, the design of which was developed by Lev Theremin. The "bug" was so well hidden that the American secret services did not notice anything, and the Soviets listened in on conversations in the ambassador's office for another 8 years. After the discovery, the device was presented to the UN as evidence of the intelligence activities of the USSR, but the principle of its operation remained unsolved for several more years. Authors: Jimmy Wales, Larry Sanger Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia: What are cells? Did you know that you have seen cells many times? If you break an orange slice, then the fibers that we see there are the cells. If you break the shell of the cell, then juice will flow from there. Scientists believe that the cell is the building material that makes up all living things. There are living organisms consisting of one or two cells. Cells are also systems in which all life processes take place. Each cell of a plant or animal lives its own life and at the same time enables all living beings to carry out their vital activity. Living cells, both plant and animal, are composed of a cell membrane, a jelly-like colorless substance called protoplasm, and a grain-like portion of protoplasm called the nucleus. It is protoplasm that is living matter. Protoplasm, no doubt, can be considered the most complex chemical substance. All vital processes take place in it. It absorbs food and oxygen, converts part of the food into living matter, throws out waste, restores worn parts and reproduces. Every cell needs oxygen and food. It needs energy to do its job. In order to provide every cell with everything necessary, higher living beings have a circulatory system that carries food and oxygen through the cells, and also removes waste.
