High-precision optical probe for studying the human brain

08.01.2024

Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have pioneered a new era in optogenetics with the unveiling of a high-precision optical probe specifically designed to monitor brain activity. This innovative class of probes incorporates microscopic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at their tip to modulate neuronal activity by inhibiting or excitating signals in nerve tissue in the brain.

A high-precision optical probe from the University of Massachusetts represents a significant advance in brain research, opening up new possibilities for treating neurological disorders. This innovative tool promises to improve our methods and approaches to understanding and treating various brain-related diseases.

Optogenetics, based on modification of neuronal genes, creates an optical channel to regulate excitation and inhibition. By using light of a specific wavelength, scientists can manipulate the activity of neurons.

The new probe, unlike those existing in optogenetics, emits light in two colors - red and blue, which makes it possible to both suppress and excite the activity of neurons. Designed to measure 0,2 mm wide and 0,05 mm thick, this microprobe promises to be an extremely powerful tool for studying the function of specific groups of neurons.

The application of this technology in the medical field, especially in the study and treatment of neurological disorders including epilepsy, is clear. The ability to inhibit and excite neurons using this probe provides new prospects for combating epileptic seizures. Research conducted in mice, which have been studied using new probes, promises to deepen our understanding of neurological mechanisms and contribute to the development of more effective treatments for various disorders.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

It is best to sleep on your side 04.01.2022

Employees of the University of Technology from Norway proved that people who sleep on their side have a healthy sleep.

Norwegian scientists conducted a study of the positions of sleeping people together with colleagues from Denmark. It turned out that those who sleep on their side have a better sleep than those who prefer to fall asleep in other positions. Sleeping on your side is a guarantee of long life for women who care about their health.

People who sleep on their side have fewer problems with curvature of the spine. They are healthier than those who prefer to fall asleep in other positions. Scientists have also determined that for a woman, sleeping on her side is even more beneficial. They believe that this is the key to female longevity.

But researchers note that sleeping on the left side is contraindicated for those who have had a heart attack or have diseases of the cardiovascular system. Also, sleeping in a similar position gets some load on the liver. And pregnant women, on the contrary, are strongly recommended to sleep on their left side, which allows the body to normalize blood circulation overnight.

An additional plus of those sleeping on their side is that they are less likely to snore. Sleepers on their backs have their tongues blocking their airways, while those sleeping on their stomachs experience pressure on their chests, which can cause snoring.
