Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

How does temperature change as you go deeper into the Earth?

The globe is covered with a stone shell - this is the earth's crust. With a deepening for every 33 meters inside the earth's crust, the temperature rises by an average of 1 degree.

This rate of temperature increase with depth (geothermal gradient) depends on the place on Earth: it turns out to be 20 meters on the island of Kalimantan (Borneo), 30-35 meters in Central Europe, 40-45 meters in North America.

The specified value of the geothermal gradient takes place only in a relatively thin layer of the earth's crust (no deeper than 100 kilometers). The core of the Earth has a temperature of 3-5 thousand kelvins.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Display for creating 3D holograms in the air 04.05.2014

The Apple patent published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office will be able, if implemented, to demonstrate to the owner of a device with this technology the most realistic visualization of a three-dimensional virtual world, and will also allow you to interact with it using various gestures.

The development, called "Interactive 3D Display System", will provide an opportunity, as noted above, not only to visually perceive a XNUMXD image, but also to touch it. According to the technical documentation, this patent describes nothing more than a holographic projection.

A registered "air display" optical system will need parabolic mirrors or lenses, which are key parts for projecting an image. Also, an infrared laser system with built-in sensors will take responsibility for creating the hologram, which will be able to recognize and store some of your gestures in memory in order to be guided by these commands to update images in the future.

Such an interaction between the projected image and the person implements the tactile control mechanism and opens a new stage of interactivity, allowing the viewer to rotate, scale and control the 3D objects created by the laser system. Thanks to the innovative "display", you can see the received images floating right in the air without the need for special glasses.

Apple is not the first company in the world to think about the implementation of such 3D holograms. In 2011, a Microsoft Research project called Vermeer made it possible to recreate an optical illusion that was presented to the viewer as a spatial model. The concept was brought to life with the help of parabolic mirrors and projector light, so the demonstration objects also had interactivity, reacting to certain movements.
