Who are mermaids?

Mermaids have never been in the world, but they are present in the legends and tales of almost all peoples. They are described as beautiful creatures living in the sea, half girl, half fish. In ancient Greek mythology, mermaids were sirens, who enchanted sailors with their singing so much that they died, rushing overboard towards the alluring call. In Germanic lore they were called Rhine maidens, who lived in a castle at the bottom of the river. Even the North American Indians had a legend about mermaids! In most legends, mermaids are represented as creatures that have a human appearance to the waist and a fish tail instead of legs.

In addition to mermaids, legends also speak of mermen - male creatures. The latter, as old legends tell, often fell in love with mortal girls whom they caught or lured into a trap. It is difficult to say what these legends are based on. Perhaps their authorship should be attributed to the first travelers and explorers, whose ships plowed the ocean waves hundreds and thousands of years ago.

Primitive peoples, who had never seen ships before, believed, seeing them, that they had risen from the depths of the sea, and therefore their crews consisted of half fish, half people. It may be, however, that the reason for the creation of legends was the meetings of people with sea animals, whose appearance vaguely resembles a human one. It is possible that sometimes seals, walruses or sea cows were perceived as mysterious, half-human beings.

In different countries, there are different legends about mermaids. In some, they have the ability to predict the future and endow people with supernatural powers and abilities.

There is a fairy tale about how a mermaid, having fallen in love with an ordinary young man, left the sea to live with him, but then, because of a broken promise, she returned to her real home. In another legend, on the contrary, a mermaid charms a person so much that he goes to live with her on the seabed.

Random interesting fact from the Great Encyclopedia:

Why did dinosaurs become extinct?

Approximately 180 million years ago, reptiles, or reptiles, reigned supreme on our planet. There were so many of them and they had such incredible power that that period is known as the "era of lizards." Scientists call it the Mesozoic era.

The largest of the reptiles were dinosaurs, some of which were, apparently, the largest animals that ever lived on Earth. And yet, despite their amazing power, about 60 million years ago, dinosaurs died out, as changing living conditions made their continued existence impossible.

The first dinosaurs were probably no larger than a turkey, and, like turkeys, they leaned on two legs when walking. Over time, they grew larger and heavier, until finally their legs were unable to support them on dry land. Therefore, dinosaurs began to spend a significant part of their time in rivers and swamps, where the water kept their huge bodies afloat. One of the most gigantic lizards were brontosaurs. The growth of these animals reached 20-25 m, and the weight was 38 tons. However, some of the lizards still remained on land.

For example, a tyrannosaurus is a monster 14 meters long and 8 meters high with a powerful heavy tail and a terrible huge mouth. Most likely, the tyrannosaurus was the largest and most ferocious predator in the entire history of the Earth. Some dinosaurs learned to fly, others to swim. However, none of them developed large enough brains. Perhaps for this reason, dinosaurs disappeared from the surface of our planet, as they "did not have the mind" to adapt to the changed living conditions.

Most scientists are inclined to believe that it was global climate change that led to the death of huge pangolins. The swamps gradually dried up, and the dinosaurs could not live on land all the time, moreover, the newly formed mountain ranges prevented their migration to other regions. In addition, climate change also transformed the plant world, and since many of the dinosaurs ate plant foods, they simply died of hunger!

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Transmitting antennae the size of a fingernail 17.04.2015

The dimensions of transmitting antennas directly affect their performance and capabilities. This imposes certain restrictions on developments in the field of electronics. But everything can change.

Scientists from the University of Cambridge have discovered that electromagnetic waves can be generated not only in the classical way - by converting the energy of electromagnetic waves using an antenna. A similar result can be achieved by using the "symmetry breaking" effect of the field caused by the motion of charged particles. This discovery could lead to tiny antennas and possibly a whole new generation of smartphone design in the future.

By using thin films of a piezoelectric material that responds to the application of a voltage, the researchers found that at certain frequencies they can act as antennas. To transfer energy in this case, it is necessary to break the symmetry of the field and accelerate the electrons.

The results of the research can contribute to understanding how electromagnetism and quantum mechanics intersect and interact.
