Boat with direct-flow steam engine. Tips for a modeler

What is the term "straight-through" commonly associated with? Of course, with aircraft jet engines to achieve the highest supersonic speeds. And how can a steamboat become direct-flow? That is what we are going to tell you about today.

The "heart-engine" of the proposed microvessel is an unusual device based on the principle of action on convection. Recall that a similar effect has found application in liquid cooling devices for some automobile engines (Trabant and others). On these machines, the water circulates on its own, as the warmer one tends to rise up, and the cold one goes down. Thus, the cooling system "pumps" water without the use of any pump.

After the construction is completed, cover all wooden parts with two layers of warm drying oil and paint with oil paints. Do not solder metal parts, except for the side and deck elements.

The steamboat engine is based on a similar principle. Hot water, warmed up and partially boiled in the coil, will rise up and then be thrown out through the aft section of the upper part of the tube. And the lower one will become an intake of fresh liquid, which will enter the coil for heating. The heat source is a tablet of dry alcohol or a piece of asbestos wool soaked in gasoline.

The numbers of individual parts correspond to the positions of the drawing of the general view of the boat model.

Immediately after cutting, bend the even petals outward by 90 °, and the odd ones - when assembling with part 6.

The coil is bent from a thin-walled metal tube with a cross section of 4 to 6 mm and a length of approximately 650 mm. A rod with a diameter of 18-20 mm will serve as a mandrel for winding the working part. The number of turns of the coil is from three to five. In this case, its total height should not exceed 30 mm and a gap of at least 2 mm should be maintained between the turns. The coil leads are as short as possible so as not to create excessive resistance to the fluid flow. The tube sections must be placed so that the difference in height between them at least does not exceed the total height of the working part of the coil (note: in the figures, with a coil height of 22 mm, the tube sections are located one above the other at a distance of 18 mm). It is important to note that the cut of the upper part of the tube must be at least 10 mm below the water level on the floating model. The coil with outlet tubes is fixed on the steamer by wedging in the slot of the body.

A good use of heat from the combustion of a tablet of dry alcohol is provided by a "cutting" curved from tin or roofing iron and, in fact, the body of the "stove". Between the fuel element and the coil, a space of about 10 mm must be left in height to allow free access of air to the flame. At the bottom of the "cutting" is placed a pallet, which is pushed forward when replacing alcohol, and in the working position lies on a heat-resistant asbestos gasket.

Before starting with the help of a medical "pear", the tube is filled with water and the steamer is placed on the water. Then the fuel is ignited, and the pan is pushed into place. When testing the model, you must be careful not to burn yourself on hot metal parts.

The motor with the proposed overall dimensions is suitable for driving any models with a length of 150...300 mm.

To work out a motor installation, you can create a stand model, which is a simple outline of wood. And only then proceed to the construction of a half-copy of a fishing boat, which is shown in the figures. If desired, it is quite acceptable to place the engine not in the stern of the microvessel, but in the middle of its hull. An interesting solution is a universal type, when the sailboat model is retrofitted with a direct-flow motor unit. Of course, here it is necessary to solve the problem of protecting the sails and spars from the flames of the steam plant.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

The world's first cyborg 30.04.2002

British scientists "connected" the nervous system of cybernetics professor Kevin Warwick with a computer, making him the world's first cyborg - part human, part robot.

The median nerve on the professor's left wrist was implanted with a 3mm silicon chip equipped with 100 electrodes, each no more than a hair's thickness. The wires were stretched under the skin of the arm and connected to a transmitter that transmits radio signals to the computer that carry information about Professor Warwick's nervous processes. For the first time in the world, the motor and emotional systems of the vital activity of the human body will be subjected to computer analysis.

Scientists hope that this research will lead to a breakthrough in the treatment of diseases such as paralysis resulting from spinal cord injury.
