From solar energy to mechanical energy. Tips for a modeler

Bulgarian engineer Nayden Naydenov built a model of an engine in which solar energy is immediately converted into mechanical energy. Let's get acquainted with the engine in the figure. Holes are drilled and threaded in the side posts of the bracket 1. Two bolts are wrapped in the holes, serving as a kind of bearings 2. Holes are drilled in their heads, where the conical heads of the shaft 3 enter. A disk 4 of heat-insulating material is fixed on the shaft. Bimetallic plates 5 are attached to the disk parallel to the shaft (only two plates are shown in the figure, although there may be more). It is desirable to separate the layers of a bimetallic plate with heat-insulating gaskets in order to reduce the heat influx from the outer layer to the inner one.

From solar energy to mechanical

Weights 6 are installed on each plate. With their help, the moment of inertia increases and, consequently, the engine power. When assembling, it is very important to pay attention to the careful balancing of the shaft, disc, plates and weights.

The shaft of the model begins to rotate immediately if it is exposed to direct sunlight. A greater effect is obtained when half of the bimetallic plates are illuminated by the sun, and the other half remains in the shade. The rotation speed will increase if a concentrator lens is placed in the path of the rays.

From the point of view of physics, it is not difficult to explain the operation of the Naidenov engine: a bimetallic plate is heated by the sun's rays and is bent. If a layer with a large coefficient of linear expansion is placed on the outside of the plate, the bend will be directed inward. As a result, its center of gravity will move closer to the axis of rotation, the balance will be disturbed and the shaft will turn through a certain angle. When the plate is in the shade, it will straighten up as it cools. And the one that fell under the rays of the sun, in turn, will bend. The shaft will turn another angle.

Of course, the heating and cooling of the plates occur continuously. Therefore, the engine runs continuously as long as the sun's rays fall on it.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Drought pollutes the air with ozone 21.04.2019

The ozone layer of the stratosphere protects us from harsh ultraviolet radiation, but in fact, ozone is toxic - being an aggressive oxidizing agent, it damages the respiratory system, causes mutations, and at high concentrations it can simply kill.

Periodically, ozone appears in the prismatic layer of air, but the World Ocean and plants save us from it - for them it is also toxic, but to a lesser extent, so that they can absorb and neutralize it without much harm to themselves. On the other hand, many plants emit volatile organic substances, which enter into various chemical reactions in the atmosphere, giving the same ozone.

Both the absorption of ozone by plants and the release of volatile substances by them, due to which ozone appears again, depends on environmental conditions. But how exactly does it depend? For example, in drought, plants close stomata - holes in the leaves through which water evaporates from the leaf and through which gases enter the leaf - oxygen, CO2 and ozone. At the same time, plants produce less volatiles due to stress.

A prolonged drought in California has allowed researchers at the University of Virginia to describe in detail how plants affect ozone levels when they find themselves in difficult environmental conditions. First, they absorb ozone less - in the driest years, 15% less than usual. Secondly, at first, with the onset of drought, trees and other plants synthesize a lot of isoprene - one of the very substances that are involved in ozone-producing reactions. Isoprene helps to cope with difficulties, so plants increase its synthesis. Accordingly, the concentration of ozone in the surface air increases.

But this requires certain resources, and after four years the synthesis of isoprene falls - more than half. At the same time, ozone pollution is also decreasing: the ozone level can decrease by 20%. That is, it can be said that the first years of the drought turn out to be especially unpleasant from the "ozone" point of view (although if the drought lasts more than 4 years, then, obviously, a lot of other problems appear from it, which do not allow one to rejoice at the weakening of ozone pollution).
