Rowing, sailing, wheeled, screw ... What other types of ships do you know? Don't guess. The model that we offer you to test at the test site does not have a mover at all. Moves it ... sea water. And the engine itself works on the principle of an MHD generator.

You can equip any toy with such an engine, as long as the dimensions allow it to be placed and there is enough space for the battery. And to understand its operation, let's briefly consider how the MHD generator works. Its essence is that it converts the energy of a hot ionized gas or plasma into electrical energy. Here is its model counterpart. Figure 1 shows a generator model, of course, simplified. The plasma here is replaced by an electrolyte of an alkaline battery, and plates from a power transformer are used as the core, the central tongues of which are shortened by 1,5-2 cm. The thickness of the core set is Ш16 -28 mm. Its dimensions are not fundamental, but the power depends on them. The coil is wound on a dielectric frame with copper enameled wire with a diameter of 0,8-1,0 mm. It is important that the magnetic field strength in the slot of the core is 10...20 oersteds. The number of turns in each coil is 000-120 turns. The larger and smaller the gap between them, the higher the magnetic field strength, and hence the electrolyte flow rate.

In the slot of the core there is a channel made of plexiglass, on the opposite walls of which electrodes made of sheet brass or copper are glued. They are connected to a DC source with regulated voltage from 100 to 200 volts.

Our model of an MHD generator does not generate electricity, but only demonstrates the principle of operation. But it can be used as an electrolyte transfer pump. Having understood how the layout works, it is easy to understand the operation of the MHD engine, which we will install in the model case.

Take a look at Figure 2. The details of the engine are similar to the details of the generator layout. It is worth lowering it into an electrolyte solution (and it can be sea or salted water), applying voltage, as a stream of electrolytic liquid will rush into the gap of the core. It is he who sets the model in motion.

To make the engine easier to fit into the body of the model, it is better to take a U-shaped core, shortening each shoulder by 5 mm. The coil can be used the same as in the breadboard.

Before installation, the engine is impregnated with nitro-lacquer and dried. The gaps are covered with sealant. But you can successfully use epoxy glue, after preparing the surface. Opposite the gap of the core, two electrodes are installed at a slight angle to the axis of the vessel.

After checking the quality of the seams and making sure there are no leaks, load the model with a portion of the load, including batteries. And there are a lot of them - six flat batteries from a flashlight. If the displacement of the model does not provide such a "carrying capacity", the engine will have to be powered from a source located on the shore.

The onboard power supply consists of six flat batteries connected in threes - one triple in parallel, the other in series. The battery, assembled in series, is connected to the coil, and connected in parallel to the plates. Now let's see what happens when the electric current is turned on. In crossed electric and magnetic fields, the Lorentz force will try to push the electrolyte molecules out of the gap, which will create a flow that will move the model forward.

Sea water or other electrolyte then acts as the rotor of the induction motor.

It is possible to increase the fluid flow rate, and hence the efficiency of the engine, by increasing the potential on the plates in the gap or the current in the coil. For example, by increasing the voltage using a semiconductor converter with a multiplier, and the current - by changing the number of batteries in the power source.

Testing the boat, as you understand, is best done in sea water or in the bathroom, dissolving a pack of table salt in it.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Moon of a distant planet 07.05.2016

While observing the distant regions of the solar system, NASA's Hubble Telescope discovered a satellite of the dwarf planet Makemake, located in the Kuiper belt. This discovery confirms the hypothesis that dwarf planets may have their own satellites. The NASA website reports the results of the study.

The moon of a distant planet was named MK2. It is located at a distance of approximately 21 thousand km from the surface of the planet and revolves around it in an orbit with a length of about 1,4 million km.

The observation was carried out by the space telescope in April 2015. Astronomers used the same tools that were used to search for Pluto's small moons in 2005, 2011 and 2012. One of Hubble's unique features is that it can see dark objects near bright ones and take high-resolution photographs of them.

"Our preliminary estimates indicate that the moon's orbit is rib-shaped, which means that when you look at the system, you can often miss it because it gets lost in Makemake's bright light. It's in a class of rare objects like the planet Pluto, so the discovery of a satellite is very important. The discovery of the moon of a distant world has given us the opportunity to study Makemake in much more detail than we could ever have without a satellite," said astronomer Alex Parker of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder ( USA).

This discovery provides scientists with valuable information about the dwarf planet system. By measuring a satellite's orbit, astronomers can calculate the mass of the system and gain insight into its evolution. The discovery also supports the idea that most dwarf planets have moons.

Scientists have found many parallels between Makemake and Pluto. Both planets are icy worlds covered in frozen methane. The experience of studying Pluto will make it easier for scientists to calculate the Makemake density, one of the key characteristics for many future studies.

Astronomers will need to revisit the Hubble data in order to make more accurate measurements of the extent of MK 2's orbit and its shape (elliptical or cyclic). According to preliminary calculations, the "moon" Makemake makes one revolution around it in 12 Earth days.

Determining the shape of the orbit of MK 2 will make it possible to resolve the issue of its origin. Scientists suggest that it arose as a result of the collision of Makemake with another object. If the moon is in a wide, elongated orbit, then the version of the “capture” of an initially foreign object by the planet will be more likely.
