Wheel manufacturing. Tips for a modeller

Kruzhkovites involved in car modeling sometimes experience serious difficulties when they need to make wheels for models-copies of cars, rollers for tanks and tractors. At our station for young technicians in the Sverdlovsk district of the city of Irkutsk, a not too complicated technology for manufacturing any wheels with a fairly high degree of their copy number has been developed.

Using this technology, schoolchildren from the age of twelve make rollers and wheels using the most common materials: plywood, chipboard, and tin. Moreover, the best results are obtained by using birch plywood with a thickness of about 10 mm.

The "tires" of the wheels are turned by the guys on a lathe from plywood in accordance with the shape and size of the tires of the prototype car. The wheel rim is cut out of sheet metal 0,2 ... 0,5 mm thick. The width of the strip is equal to the thickness of the "tire", the length is equal to the circumference of its inner diameter. The strip is bent into a ring, inserted into the plywood blank and tightly fixed with a mandrel. Next, with a hammer with a spherical head, the rim is flared on the "tire", after which the mandrel is removed, the wheel disks are installed and soldered to the rim.

For the manufacture of disks, it is necessary to make a stamp, which consists of a punch, a matrix, an ejector and a guide rod. A round blank for a disk is cut out of tin thicker than the tin that went to the rim. A hole for the guide rod is pre-drilled in it. The forging of the disk is done by blows of a heavy hammer. The shape and dimensions of the stamp are selected depending on the shape of the disk. In this case, the punch is machined exactly according to the shape of the future part, and it is better to make the matrix as a team, from washers or rings.
